Sorry for the typos, for those of you with your own web page, which software did you like for building the page and who is the best for hosting the page?

I've had pages hosted on a number of sites...but I don't have anything hosted anywhere now. You can go to Google and search for web hosting ratings or something like that...one I found is: http://www.isp-guide.com/

For creating web sites, I personally use Macromedia Dreamweaver and Allaire HomeSite. They might be a little expensive...a really nice free html creation program is HTMLKit. You can find it at http://www.chami.com/
Easy to use, and did I say, it was free?

Good luck, and make sure you let us know when you get your site up!

Regards,

Andrew

One issue to watch out for when you look for hosts is who owns the URL. One scam is that the ISP will register GeofPhoto.com for you, but the ISP -not you- owns the URL. Then when the traffic goes up, they raise the price. You can't get another ISP since you don't own the URL.

And if they go bankrupt, you are just out of luck.

Actually that scam has popped up recently and has effected some major sites so you just never know. try to get bandwidth from your isp with a sub domain if you dont need a lot a space. My isp gives my 7 10 meg accounts for "free" If you only need 10-20 megs your isp might give you the best deal.

Canon A40, Canon EOS

I just share photos with friends and family so it's a simple and fast setup.

1. Basic Earthlink account - allows for 8 email addresses, each email account gets 10 megs for a total of 80 megs for your pictures.

2. BreezeBrowser software with the Canon G2 - automatically creates a set of web pages with selected pictures.

If I want to be fancy I usually edit the web pages in FrontPage.

Like most scams, it has been around for a while. We got stung at work about six years ago.

Brutal has a good point: you might already have some web space available. Enough to experiment with. And Geocities/Yahoo still have some free web space available albeit with limitations and advertising overlays.

I create web pages with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX (code) and Adobe PhotoShop (graphics). I have done few photo galleries with PHP and MySQL databases. This is the hard way, but doing all by your self is really rewarding. You can design any functionality you want and make things work just the way you want.

I use webmasters.com for my 2 web sites. They have fairly generous limits (10 gigabytes of bandwidth per month, 750 megabytes of disk space). However, if you were going to be building the next Amazon.com or such, I believe pair.com is the site with the name, and the resources. I did put a list of some of the places I found in my computer web page:

http://www.the-meissners.org/computer.html#Webhost

Since I edit my main web pages by hand (with emacs), and write my own software to build the web pages, I can't say which is the best web building software.

Hi Geoffrey, this may be a bit technical but here goes anyway:

I use PHP Script/Program called Gallery. It is incredibly powerful and free! It is a dynamic online well ... gallery. You can set up albums within albums you can move albums and the really cool thing is that you can upload directly to it. There is also a dynamic search as well as the ability to caption your photos.

Get gallery here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/

My Gallery running standalone:
http://www.capetownhome.com/splinky/modules/gallery/index.php

The difficult thing is the setup that is why if you can find a friend to set it up for you then its a breeze after that.

To run it you will need a web host that supports PHP, Mine cost me $14 per month for 250meg of space [I am not going to mention who since I have found them very unreliable but that is another story]. If you are interested then look around there are gazillions! Make sure you find them through a "review" site that gives you other options.

Once you have that then get your friend to set it up for you it is the last technical thing you will need from there it all makes sense.

You can also incorporate it into another web portal script that is really powerful called PHP-Nuke and also totally free!

Get php-Nuke here:
http://www.phpnuke.org

This is what my site looks like with PHP-Nuke and Gallery as a module:
http://www.splinky.co.za

If you are interested then let me know via this link and I will advise further.

Dwane.

PS: I am originally an ASP developer but there are so many very cool FREE aaplications for PHP, you do get them for ASP but not nearly as many and I personally find PHP faster for some reason but that is another debate.
