Having seen the news release on DPR and the listing of the lens on several sites, first indications suggest that it does not. However I was most interested in that on Adorama that the Tripod Mount D is being listed as a 'replacement item' and in white only:

http://www.adorama.com/searchsite/default.aspx?searchinfo=canon tripod mount d

So perhaps it will come with the mount afterall...time will tell.

Regards
Stephen

Seems like the picture of the MP-E 65mm and the EF 180mm Macro are with the tripod mount (on the Canon site), but the new EF 100mm IS is not. So I guess it will be delivered without.

Nor does B&H's "What's in the box".

I done quite a bit of studio (well actually laboratory) photography at slow shutter speeds using cold light sources only. Thus a tripod collar is very useful to minimise shake as the camera is better balanced.

Kind regards
Stephen
does it need one? Lens is onl 120mm long and 625grams.
Or is there another reason a collar would be favourable ? :)

Yeah I am aware of this, but was interested in Adorama stating that it is a replacement item. I am also quite surprised to see that it is being listed as white - perhaps this is an error.

Kind regards
Stephen

AFAIK, Tripod Mount Ring D is a new ring introduced with 100mm L macro. None of the white lenses use it.

Maybe I'm missing something, and I do respect Bedbugs background, far better than mine in the macro world. But the average tripod mounted lens is usually heavier than the camera, substantially heavier so a balance is achieved when you can tripod mount the lens rather than the camera, my own example is the Tamron 200 - 400 f5.6 (discontinued) and my Sigma 150 f2.8 macro.

In the macro world, I think you'd be better off getting Adorama's cheapie focusing rail than worrying about a lens mounted on the tripod.

An excellent lens lasts a lifetime, an excellent DSLR, not so long.

Thanks I am aware of this, but why is it white and not black since the macro lens is black? I canot help but wonder if several more lenses will be shortly coming with the same mount, which are white lenses.

Kind regards
Stephen

I have had one of Adorama focusing rails for over 15 years now and it is damn fine bit of kit if you are doing studio macro work. I still would like the tripod mount on the 100 for studio (or laboratory in my case) with slow shutter speeds as the set up is sturdier.

Kind regards
Stephen

That is my thought too: error on Adorama website or soon there will be more lenses using this ring (in white).

With my 100 Macro lens and an Acratech ballhead on a 40D, I get significant lens "sag" after tightening down the ballhead. I bought a heavier ballhead to use with my 5D Mark 2 and long lenses, and the lens sag went away with the 40D. Perhaps a lens collar, which is cheaper than a new ballhead, would also solve the problem of lens sag if your ballhead is borderine heavy enough.

I recommend using one of the Manfrotto geared head such as the 410:

http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/2344?livid=80 |81&idx=85

or the new 405:

http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/2345?livid=80 |81&idx=85

These are rock solid and for macro work terrific when fine camera positioning is required.

Hi Stephen,

This afternoon i picked the lens up at my dealer (overhere in the Netherlands)
The lens comes with:
  • front lenscap E-67U
  • rear lenscap
  • LP 1219 lenscase (soft one)
  • Hood ET 73
  • manual
The D type tripod ring is not supplied, according to the manual te be sold separately.

I've tried to fit both the A and B type tripod rings, they won't fit so you have to buy a D-type tripod ring.

Bokeh is butterly soft
Colors and contrast looks fine

Sharpness .... i think about the same as the "old" 100-2.8 USM macro (don't tested them next to each other, don't have the time for it the next 3 weeks due to other priorities)
IS works like a dream, comparable with the 70-200 4.0L IS

Focussing is very fast with a little hunting in low light on my 5DmkII But it locks quite fast, much faster than the old 100-2.8 USM macro lens.

For half the money the old macro lens is a real bang for the buck. (For the old one i can use the tripodring from my 100-400 and MPE-65 so no extra costs for a tripod ring with the old lens for me)

Best regards,

Rob

I would certainly get the Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for the Canon 100/2.8 L IS macro lens. The lens would get pretty front-heavy when using the Sigma EM-140 macro ring light flash.

...I've stumbled upon this:

as it costs next to nothing, perhaps it might be of interest for you,

Thanks Quercy for that information. I am quite curious to see that it is suppose to fit both the IS & non-IS versions of the 100 maco, yet Canon makes different mounts for both. Thus I am a tad skeptical that the ebay version will do both, although it certainly does not cost a lot.

Kind regards
Stephen
