Howdy Folks. Just thought that I'd let everyone know that I downloaded an app that I think I first rread about here on the forum which fixes hot pixels. It's called Hot Pixel Killer and I found that it works great. It doesn't , of course, prevent hot pixels but it does a pretty slick job of getting rid of them on your photos. It's very simple to use and when used in batch mode, it processed 100 jpegs in about 15 seconds. It creats a seperate directory to put the cleaned jpegs into (but doesn't disturb the originals) and also does as claimed...it saves the fixed jpegs lossless. I examined the cleaned files carefully and I can't detect any difference in the before and after quality. My UZI has only 1 hot pixel and I'm not sending in away for repairs just for one pixel (don't want to put myself through UZI withdrawl). I'm rreally pleased with this little app and would like to thank the person who posted the original message about it (sorry I can't remember who it was). If you're interested in zapping hot pixels, you can get it here http://www.girder.nl/hpk/index.php cheers, Eddy Vortex

Well, just call me dense.........I downloaded it and tried it and it doesn't look any different. I don't find the instructions to be very clear but maybe it's just me? Maybe you could explain how to use it step by step? I got a few windows asking questions that I had no clue how to answer. Thanks!

Sure Julie. First, the work flow to follow goes thusly- you'll have photos in both portrait and landscape orientation depending on how you held your camera when you took the photos(the portrait ones will simply be sideways). The first thing to do will be to remove the hotpxels with Hot Pixel Killer and secondly change the portrait photos to vertical orientation with any photo editing app. If you change the orientation first (like I did) you'll just make twice the amount of work for yourself. Assuming that you've unzipped and installed the software, start Hot Pixel Killer (HPK) and open a photo....zoom in deeply to a hotpixel....open the "Hotpixel list" dropdown menu item.....choose "new Hotpixel list"....put the cross that displays with the hand on your cursor exactly on the hotpixel and right click and then click "add hotpixel from the cursor menu which displays.... in the dialog box which appears, the x,z coordinates of the hotpixel will be automatically be recorded as will the size of the photo; for 'method' choose 'radius average' (for now); Param1 = the size of your hotpixel (i set mine at 4); Param2=the size of the circle surrounding the hotpixel from which the app will choose the colour to overpaint the hotpixel (I set mine to 9).....the dialog box will close....go to Hotpixel list again and choose "save Hotpixel list" ,give the new list a name and save it...go to file pulldown item and choose "cleanup image"; save the cleaned file.....a new "Question" dialog box opens = "XXX pixels changed, open output file?" choose 'yes' and it will display the cleaned area of the photo and you will bee in possession of 2 photos, one with hotpixel and one without. Voila!! Don't forget when you go into HPK next time that you have to load the appropriate Hotpixel list (you'll probably have many lists created over a period of time). If you use the batch processing function and clean a complete subdirectory. HPK creats a "cleaned" subdirectory and puts the cleaned file into it and doesn't rename the claened files in any way. Remember not to rotate your portrait photos until you've used HPK first otherwise you'll need 2 hotpixel lists, one for landscape and one for portrait and you'll have to seperate your lands and ports into 2 directories and run through the process twice. Anyway, hope this helps...if you need further assistance, please let me know. I love this app. Eddy Vortex

I'm sorry to hear that HPK is a little tricky, I tried to make the online help clear, but I guess its still techno babble ;-).

Anyway I'm glad people are using it!

Ron, I found the 'online help' to be very well written and easy to understand. I didn't have any problems with it at all. I just thought that I'd respond to the reply that I recieved and try to help that person out (and I had a bi of time on my hands). BTW...I love your HPK software, what a great time-saver. Eddy Vortex

Hi Ron,

Sounds like a very interesting program. I just downloaded it and have not looked at it yet. I have a 2100 with a hot pixel, and a few warm pixels. Being without your camera is hard. I could settle for this instead of sending it in. Anyways, I'll bump you to the top again, and check out your software. Thanks.

Jim
