lost my focusing LEDs

I have a 2-1/2 year old XTi. A week or so ago, I noticed that I no longer had LEDs that lit up to indicate which point or points were in focus. They light up when I'm choosing which one I want to use, but after I've set it, when I half-press the shutter, nothing is shown. Not only are the LEDs missing in the viewfinder, but nothing is displayed on the LCD screen on the back.

I don't know if something's broken, or if it's user error. Maybe they don't show in certain situations, and I turned some option off?

Has anyone seen this problem or have an idea what's up?

That's the first thing that springs to mind for me. If the lens is now in Manual Focus, I wouldn't expect the focus points to light up.

It's usually on AF, and it seems to focus OK. It's only when it's important that I know which point it's using, that I feel the problem.

With the shutter button half-pressed, an active point which is over something in focus will light up.

It's worth trying that - manual focus, single AF point, half-press, and move the camera back and forward through the focus distance. Does it beep? Does it light up the AF point in the viewfinder?

Do you have it on AI servo?
When the AF mode is set for AI Servo, the manually selected focus point only flashes very briefly at initial half-press. It's easy to miss. If Auto AF Point Selection is active, then none of the AF points flash at inital half-press. The AF point(s) won't light again, and the focus confirmation light in the viewfinder does not light either.
