Hello everyone, I'm rather new to digital photography and to this site which I find very helpful, I'm a hobbeyst not a pro and looking to buy a reasonably priced monolight, I came accross the Medalight PG600XL 300ws and it sounded real good and the price is right as well, has anyone here used it before ? unfortunately the manufacturer's website doesn't offer a whole lot of info, I couldn't tell whether the modeling light is a regular household light ? can you control the light in steps or stepless ? is it fan cooled ? I will appreciate the feedback about the performance as well as the features of this light, thanks a lot in advance :)

They even have a website? I'd be interested in a link of you have it.

I sound like a broken record but consider Alien Bees. You'll find lots of folks around here that use them and they are particularly well suited to digicams. A bit more expensive for a 320ws unit, $280, but worth it IMHO. They are very well engineered and particularly well suited to digicams with a continous full to 1/32 power range. Household bulbs for modeling lights.

the only website I found was http://www.photogenicpro.com , I just assumed that they ought to be similar since it's the same manufacturer and photogenic isn't a bad brand from what I understand.

I found the Medalight I mentioned+nice stand+umbrella for about 254 on B&H , if I was to buy the same from AB it would be a whole lot more, I did hear lots of ppl say good things about them but their packages just didn't make sense to me, it seemed like it would be cheaper if I bought each item separate than buying a package!

Mark,

I have a Medalite PG 4001, although it is no PG600XL, I'm confident you will be very satisfied with Alienbees. My 2 AB400s have more than enough power for most setups. The quality is much better than the Medalites and the accessories for ABs are readily available at reasonable cost.

I'd second the Alien Bee's, they have a very good rep around here.

You also need to consider the system. Like cameras, you often decide on strobe systems based on the available accessories. To do otherwise is to limit your flexibility and your photography.

In auto terms, the Medalight would be a used Hyundai with 100,000 miles on it... I'd at least consider the new Ford Escort.

BTW, a Canon 550ex TTL on-camera strobe costs $320. $280 for a monolight is a good deal.
