Now using my new 707. On low resolution or downsized photos of houses, the horizontal lines of the siding and roof shingles are exhibiting odd wave patterns. As these photos are being imbedded into reports that get e-mailed, i do not want huge file sizes. Is there someway to eleminate this phenomenon?

First, do not take the shots in low resolution. Take them in the max res of the camera.

Second downsize the images in Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com (It's free and everyone should have a copy of this excellent program.)

This will use bicubic resampling and some sharpening resulting in a very pleasant picture without the "jaggies" and close lines without "morie pattern" which is what I think you are describing.

If you could post an example it would be nice.

I suspect it is moire (just did not want to use the term incorrectly)
Would be glad to post a photo, but haven't figured out the process as yet.

At least you can spell it, which more than can be said for me ";^)

To post requires that the picture is "published" or uploaded to a server somewhere on the web. Then just type in the address here on a line and voila it appears.

So have you only shot them in low res or have you tried resizing from high res and are still getting moire?

Thusfar, I've only taken such photos on a medium resolution setting and then downsized from there. (just got the 707 this week) April '02 manufacture date, btw.

The in camera resizing (which is what is happening when you use a lower resolution) is not as good as what you can do with post processing software. Give it a try and give us a holler if that still doesn't do the job.

Enjoy

If the problem is, moire, then I suggest that you apply a slight "Blur" to the area that is causing the pattern problem. I once had a picture of an executive wearing a herringbone jacket that created tremendous problems during a slide presentation. Using Photoshop and selectively blurring the areas that were 'vibrating" brought the problem under control.

just downloaded the the recommended software...amazing, thank you.

downsized images are vastly superior to my previous results.

do you know if it is possible to select and downsize multiple images, rather than processing one at a time?

Under the "File" menu you will find batch conversion that allows you to convert a whole bunch at once.
