So the new 1D announcement will be in ?

No the new 1 series is scheduled for this year. Availability may well be January but I'd expect a announcement within a month at most.
there was rumours of a sept 24th announcement from canon .. perhaps... ?

of course it's rare that canon would announce that far in advance.. :|

Normally, Canon announces a new 1D in time for the Olympics. With all the problems Canon had with the MkIII, I thought they'd indroduce a MkIV in time for the winter Olympics in Vancouver. I guess the winter Olympics aren't that big a deal any more.
In spite of repeated claims, Canon's DSLR announcements have never had any relationship to the Olympics of any other external event except PMA and Photokina. On the other hand, Paul Pope has never been wrong about announcements.

1D Mark III - 21 Feb. 2007
1Ds Mark III - 20 Aug. 2007
Rebel XSi - 23 Jan. 2008
Rebel XS - 8 July 2008
40D - 20 Aug. 2007
50D - 26 Aug. 2008
5D Mark II - 17 Sept. 2008
Rebel T1i - 25 March 2009
7D - 1 Sept. 2009

I'd say Canon is done with its major announcements for Fall 2008.

AND, I will be attending a private event in New York for technology editors on Thurs. Sept 17. In past years at this event, Canon has always indicated that its major holiday-season announcements are complete. I see no reason why this year would be any different, as the company has to produce marketing collateral for availability at this event.

I think it will be in both English and Japanese. :)

Well I don't know anything about a actual date but Sept 24th would fit in with the usual availability schedule.... all the other 1 series announced in September (go look em up should give you a hint on whats coming) never made it to wide availability until after Xmas ...

My 1D3 is an amazing camera. I don't think I've once wished it was full frame. Most 1D shooters are sports/wildlife shooters anyways so the advantages of thinner DOF and WA lenses really aren't as appealing. 80% of the shots I take are with my 500 F4 L IS with a 1.4 TC strapped between so FF gets me nothing but less reach.

If I had to guess, I'd imagine the 1DIV will probably be 18mp 1.3 12fps and I'll have mine ordered the day of launch.

There is also an sharpness gain with FF, You have to enlarge an 1.3 crop 1.3 times more than a FF pic, thus reducing sharpness to something like 66%....

1D announced September 2001, a few months before the 2002 Winter Olympics.
1D-MkII announced January 2004, a few months before the 2004 Summer Olympics.
1D-MkIIn announced August 2005, a few months before the 2006 Winter Olympics.

1D-MkIII announced February 2007, was the only one announced way before the next olympics (summer 2008).

I figured with all the problems Canon had with the MkIII, and the bomb-shell Nikon dropped with the D3 before the 2008 Olympics, Canon would be anxious to release a replacement in time for the 2010 winter games.

I think dnjake is right on this one: with the lifetime of the models between 24 and 36 months, almost 4 months is a long time

Vancouver: Feb 8-24, 2002, ±4.5 months
1D-MkII announced 29 January 2004, a few months before the 2004 Summer Olympics.

1D-MkIIn announced 22 August 2005, a few months before the 2006 Winter Olympics.

1D-MkIII announced 22 February 2007, was the only one announced way before the next olympics (summer 2008).
