GF-1

Looks like a nice big brother of the LX3 but I'm not crazy about the price!

What is the price? Too lazy to check here.

I think that is probably more key at the moment though, price matters more than anything! It could end up just being a toy for wags and the uber rich.

I have found this camera very interesting and charming. Particularly interesting the modular way about evf (reduced in G1 and removed/attached here). I follow and like this trend with interest. But... for users (like me) that were waiting for the LX4 with interchangeable lenses, simply this is not the right moment, design refers to LX3 like the fz28 shapes recall a dslr but they are different species. I think more reasonable to compare this camera with G1 or EP1.

Amazon has it as of 3:00 p.m. California time. Same price, taking pre-orders.

But this is EXACTLY the sort of camera we have been asking for for years!
Agreed,

this is what I have been waiting for for years, or at least the closest thing to it.

What I really want is a Digital Fuji 645zi (anybody who has had one should know).

Why people are so enamored of DSLRs, I'll never understand. Out of necessity, I've got lots of them, and I'll be happy to say goodbye to the extra size and weight of both lenses and body.

The added size and complexity of lenses adapted to the mirror and prism paradigm is something we should have at least begun to move away from long before now.

very excited.

this is certainly a serious tool. lots of talk about lx3 vs gf1. although they attract very similar users I think the output (print vs screen) will determine the final decision at purchase time.

for street work bound to be hung on walls... this certainly fits the bill. i'm glad i ummed and ahhed about the lx3.

it's a cheap m8.

Bravo! No camera maker will please us all. So we need to get off the rag; if you don't like it don't buy it. I'm sure Panasonic isn't going to lose any sleep over it. I at least appreciate that Panasonic is trying.
The only problem is.... we don't always agree on what we want. So if they try to please some of us, then they fall short with others.
One fact is highly predictible. Over time, technology will improve. If you wait long enough, you might get your ideal camera, unless you add a few more things to your must have list.

If it pleases you then to hell what everyone else thinks!

Seems like they'll have to put out a couple of great zoom lenses to compete with the built-in one on the LX3 + something like a 70-300mm equiv.

Then you'd have to decide which you want on the body...& if you want to attach the VF, etc etc ...... unless you're one of the dedicated prime purists. ;)

I like making pictures.

I am pretty much in agreement with you . . .
I was so waiting for this camera to arrive...

I had a hunch it was in the pipeline.

But i'm devastated that there's no flip out lcd.

it's what i've been waiting for - i'm speechless i can't believe they've f-cked i up...

to you it might not be a big deal, but the way i shoot, having a small 'rangefinder style' camera and a flip out lcd for waist level shooting is something i've been dreaming of for years (since about 2004). i'm gutted : (

OK, but can you see in it anything from waist level?

serious question.

if you can, then woopeee i'll re-consider, but i doubt it.

that tilting evf, maybe you can see in it from chin/neck level, but any lower than that I can't see the point of it.

Happy for someone to explain to me : )

cheers

Why my Pentax Auto 110 SLR could be so tiny.
While these µ4/3 cameras are so much larger.

This camera weighs:
159 grams and is 56 x 99 x 32mm

Contrast this to a Panasonic GF1, which is:
315 grams and is 71 x 119 x 36.3mm

This camera uses 110 film, which is almost the same size as a 4/3 sensor.
(17 x 13mm, vs 18 x 13.5mm)

love that new GF1! fast AF, EVF, great IQ (waiting for high ISO)

unless I already have LX3 it could be my next camera, even price tag of $1000+ won't stop me.

The internal flash involve displacement of the top plate. That strikes me as being an open invitation to dust entering the camera.

I've already had dust problems both with a Ricoh GX 100 and a Pana FX38. Both have been back to the shop.

I've more or less solved the GX100's problem by leaving the add-on adapter on it (with filter and hood) all the time. FX38 is just a leap of faith.

I'll hold of on this otherwise extremely interesting camera until I hear how this plays out in real life...

The rumor for the LX-3 successor, is the LX-4, with a 1/1.3 sensor. Unless they can keep the dimensions of the LX-x series, the GF1 may gobble it up.
why? the GF1 will cost much more and be bigger in any case, altough both are targeted at advanced users, they are different kind of cameras!
