Hello,

Check out the pics from our recent trip here:

I welcome comments....

Only auto levels and USM applied. I think it is difficult to optimize the parameters when doing USM. If someone can enlighten me with their work flow it would be greatly appreciated.

This picture says it was taken at ISO100 but why is it so grainy???

It it just me? Or does the "original" sized version look very grainy?
It might be my monitor. I'd like to know if anyone else see's this.

I like 'em.

I'd stay away from autolevels (just manually adjust levels), and try a fill flash once and awhile and see if you like the results.

  • Canon EOS D-30 & PowerShot S100
  • Maybe one day I'll take a decent picture. In the meantime, I'll blame the equipment. :)

I agree!

I think the grainyness is from the USM.... Could someone share their parameters (approximate) as well as what to look for when tweaking them.

Background on "original" is obvisously grainy. Otherwise, it looks pretty good. As the images are downsized, apparent flaws will diminish in recognition as they are reduced in size as well.

There is no general setting for USM as each image will react differently unless all are of same scene and equal exposure. I prefer a starting point of 150,1.9,0 and usually only change the % and leave the other two alone.

300 is zapping it pretty hard but, the large file size of the D60 JPEG/Fine can stand it in some instances.

So the link goes to a nice shot of Sandra Jean. I've heard of people being in love with their boat but this is ridiculous :-)

Yes, it looks like you've taken blurred pics and you've tried to restore some sharpness (which is almost impossible unless you resize them down to 50% or so!)...
Anyway, you've got a nice girlfriend, and here are my USM settings in photoshop:
35, 1, 0 for a medium sharpening
50, 1, 0 for a "normal" sharpening.

I agree with previous comments regarding focus and USM; can't fix the former with the latter, although that doesn't mean I don't try if I only have one shot. With USM the actual settings don't matter that much (to me), but you need to look at the results as you tweak the settings - as soon as you have haloes you've overdone it (this is true for web use, not necessarily for printers etc).

On another tack...

Composition: some of them look good, but others look like they could benefit from some cropping. I know that you can do a lot in the viewfinder, but when all the images are the same aspect ratio I wonder if more thought could be applied here. For example "after the swim" looks sharper than some of the others, but it might be better if the camera had been turned the other way, or at least if the right half of the image was cropped out. The right hand bit isn't that interesting. I'd try to crop it so where the towel meets her lower back (if you see what I mean) is at the edge of the frame.

As someone else said, a bit of fill flash would fix the dark eyes and improve it some more.

He's just farsighted (or checking her ear for wax!).

I like the sunglass extreme closeup and wish you had put your friend into the rearview mirror shot. ("WARNING Objects appear larger than they really are.")

In a couple of the shots Grethe is centered too much for my taste but all in all I'd be happy to claim authorship.

Thanks.
