Except for APS-C, the 7D is what the 5D Mark II should have been.

The 5D Mark II is a great camera, but I really feel that the 7D (with the exception of sensor size) is what the 5D Mark II should have been.
Sure, the 5DMKII should have been able to shoot more than 3.9 fps. It should have had 18mp instead of 24. I wonder how the market will react to the 7D. I think it is bogus to call an APS-C camera a 7D, no matter how many pixels it may have and no matter how many frames per second it can shoot. It is quite a let down to learn that it is going to be APS-C.

yes, but would you have been willing to wait until this year to get it?

Think of it from Canon's POV. Stick a FF 21.1 (or 18) MP sensor in this camera, and who would buy the 1-series at twice or thrice the price?

Me, I love the 5D2, and might (depending on real world high ISO and AF performance) buy the 7D to replace my backup 50D.

And I'm salivating at the thought of what we can expect in the 5D Mark III in a few years' time. You would think all of the 7D features, plus higher MP and cleaner ISO FF. Add a second CF or SD slot and that would be camera nirvana for me. For now, I'll live with splitting it across two bodies.

And I'm sure 25 and 24 FPS video is on its way to the 5D2 via firmware...

Cheers,
gL

Perhaps, but would you have paid an extra $500-800 for the 5D Mark II for the extras that the 7D has?

I honestly sense a 3D in the pipeline...but they'll wait till the 5D II sales trickle down from the blazing inferno that it is right now. As big a success as the 5D II has been, I think the 7D will be even bigger.

Yes, it is what I wanted apart from the small sensor. But honestly, its the perfect camera for lots of applications. Wildlife/Birders are going to go nuts for this. And continuing on that positive note, it looks like the engineers finally started listening to what people said about previous cameras (or they just got tired of being a sad second to Nikon as far as usability in lots of areas goes).

The 7D looks on paper to be fairly well loaded with useful features.. add to that video in 24,25,30, and 60fps (encoded in a format that is easily read), the 7D is looking like an answer to the 5DII doubters. But it better have some awesome noise algorithms to cope with all those tiny photo-sites. You have to wonder if the camera could have traded a few MP for another few stops in physical (rather than digital) noise control. Still, it looks pretty killer for the APS-C shooters who want to step up.

Good news is that these will all "filter up" sooner or later.

7D is a marketing ploy, and not a bad one. That said, the 7D seems to be built closer to Nikon standards

Yeah, I could have waited until now. I would even be willing to upgrade if Canon were to announce a similarly spec'ed full-frame camera. Unfortunately, the 5D Mark II is only a year old and won't see an update for another two.
Chuckles .. I doubt 90% of the people in this forum with no hindsight would be able to wait .. and nothing really states that a 5DIII could not appear .. as long as it's after the 1Ds Mark IV gets released.

IMO - I agree with you though, it would be nice to see the featureset on the 5D2 sized sensor.

but I think we still have to wait for the 1Ds to get it's revision first .. the 7D really wasn't slewfooting any 1 series body .. no so really with the 5D2.

What's wrong with APS-C?

Well, it's a valid point. Canon brought out the 1D MKIII with a cropped sensor, albeit 1.3, then Nikon trumped them with the D3 full-frame. I suspect Nikon will do it again...

I already paid $500 more for the original 5D when it first came out. If the 5D Mark II had similar features for $500 more then I think that would be acceptable.
I honestly sense a 3D in the pipeline...
Maybe.
