Here I am again guys...
I need HELP !!

My 7D won't POWER-UP !!
I changed CF cards, a few weeks ago and it had a hared time powering-up.
It wound just make a "fzzt" noise, and the red light would come on and go off.

Then after awhile it was OK, for about a week and I changed cards again and it hasn't powered-up since. No red light no nothing.

Can Anybody HELP ??!!

I think both my batteries are DEAD !!
or Maybe my charger is not charging them right.

(I can't find the AC adapter now either).

Both batteries are 4+ yrs old and have never been replaced.

I'll keep looking for the AC adapter.
I'm looking at batteries on eBay too.

I hope that's all that's wrong.

It's been a GREAT CAMERA !!

I'll keep ya posted.

Hi,

are you sure it's the battery? Because unfortunately it seems to be the way my 7D behaved back in 2007 when it got the general AS-System failure. I have commented about this in other posts some while back on this forum.

Good luck and I hope I'm wrong

Thats exactly how mine went.. at first I was able to switch it off and switch it on and all was good...after 6 months it died completley.. I spent 280 dollars to have it fixed...then three months later Sony sent me a check for 280 dollars

Well, everything seems to be O.K. !!
I got a charge in the Batts and it seems to be OK, for the last three sessions.
I have two new BATTS and an AC adapter coming.

Thanks for all your input.

I'd have to think LONG and Hard before I spent $300 to fix a camera. Seems like that money could go toward a NEW one... God Forbid !!

Thanks, again.

Ive had my KM 7D since Nov 2004, I still have the two original batteries and charger I bought with it..its now 5 years old... and Ive run 70,000 actuations through it, I use it daily together with my A700... the Batteries and charger show no signs of a problem... I did have a problem with the camera doing what your is experiencing.,. a reset worked for a few months then it quit all together...had to send it in for repair. Later I got the money back from Sony.

Nice! I'd be in the same boat if my 7D went. LOVE the camera. LOVE the controls. Don't want to give it up.

OK !! It won't start anymore... period !! It's been a few weeks since I used it last.

It only lasted a few weeks but now it will not "Power-Up".

Anybody got any suggestions on who I can go talk to about fixing it and the COST ??!!

Is it worth it ?? (maybe $280 FIX) SONY has some nice new models with 10-12 Mps... all my lenses will fit too...

Any suggestions ?
I'd like to hear some opinions.

Thanks, Captbruce

Biggest problem with that camera is you won't find anything from Sony for $300 that produces images that are as clean looking at ISO400. With that said, I would not repair a 5D. The 7D is a bit of a different animal. I'd be hard pressed if it was in excellent condition. Still I'd probably be tempted to put the money toward something else. No suggestion, since I don't have any experience with anything but an A700 and one frame with an A900.

Good luck

Hi,

well unfortunately happend what I expected after I red your first post.

The main question for decision I'd consider is if with the investment in a repair there's any real chance to recover the money (or some of the money), for example trading in your then repaired 7D when buying something newer (I'd suggest the A700) or even better selling it to a 7D-fan - or to keep it for a while.

Let's face it actually it's only a paper weight. But the 7D seems to be quite well placed on the used market as being a "classic" which has its admirers. Just it's hard to say if this is still true.

When Sony started to back this problem ( 2 years ago ) they originally gave an option to get a pro rated rebate toward a New Sony camera... This is a first black frame issue, that finally goes permanently bad. Sony made the statement two years ago that the pro-rate was based on seven years, and if you still had the original sales slip... At this point I am not sure if Sony is still backing the 7D, but a call to Sony would verify this... the cost to repair ( one price to fix ) is 280 dollars, But Sony has been doing this repair for free... it requires that you contact Sony, they will but you on to a KM representative, you mail in the camera to Precision Camera in Connecticut, and they will repair it... I'M not sure if Sony is still picking up the cost..

Well,
Sony will not help ANY with the $281 "Flat-Rate" repair.
They say the partial rebate program ended earlier this year.

So, I think I'll be looking for a NEW camera.

I just can't see spending $300, for a fix, and still winding up with a 6Mp camera.
AM I wrong ??!!

I told Sony C/Serv., it would NOT be a SONY, with that kind of "Customer Service"... I was just blow'in off steam... It might be a SONY, but I'm gonna look LONG and HARD !!
meanwhile, I have my trusty FUJI to fall back on.

Thanks for your help guys.

--The Sony rep said the rebate program ended earlier this year but did the First frame black repair end.. this was deemed a manufacturing defect. Your camera has now failed due to this problem. And this is not natural wear and tear.. I would not give up on this...

I'm still going around with SONY, about going half-sies on fixing my 7D...
It's not looking good. It might go on eBay for parts or repair, soon.

But... In the meantime,

I bought a A300, off craigslist ($285, for the body only, with 1500 actuations). It seems to be really nice, although it's much smaller and lighter (cheesier feeling)then the 7D. It's has 10.2 Mps, and "Live View" with the flip-down display. Really NICE !!

I looked at the A700, but couldn't justify the extra $$$... Actually my 7D had way more features then this old Sea Captain knew what to do with.

Anyway, I wanted to follow-up. Thanks for your help. captbruce

Thanks for your help guys.
I just got off the phone woth Precision Camera. Nice Folks !!

I am shipping the 7D to them today.
They said if it is the "FF-Black" issue, it will probably be NO CHARGE !!
They will call me with the estimate before any work is done.

She said they still have a some special deal with SONY, and most times just a phone call from Precision to Sony is all it takes.

There is still HOPE !!
