I have an opportunity to shoot a few headshots (chest up) for a friend. She wants to make black and white prints at 19.5" x 23.5. Do I have a chance using digital? Is is posible to get a quality print of this size using a digital file from a D1x? If so, I would really appreciate any recommendations as to software, do's and dont's, etc. My friend has some prints of this size already in her salon, but I think they were done with medium format.

I really appreciate the help!

Im not toally familiar with the D1x, but I do know that it is possible with the D100, and the quality can be pretty good too. You should only have to blow it up a little over 200%... I may be wrong about this but I think that it can be done fine, anyone else care to comment?

Using a 5 or 6 meg camera and really high resolution I would think you would have a great chance. What size monitor do you use to view your shots. Just have your monitor show you an equivalent piece of a 19.5 X 23.5 inch picture and prove it to yourself.

Yes.

How are you going to convert it to B&W? And do you have a place in mind to get it printed? If you do, what do they suggest? (Prints that size don't come cheap and I would talk to the place about THEIR suggestions!

YEs, I have seen prints were enlarged to 36X 42 inch from D100 and the result is GREAT! Seen it with my own eyes... :)

The lab proved them to me..

Thanks for the help so far. I'll find out about the lab and contact them, good suggestion. What software program will I need. I've only heard of one called genuine fractals, I believe it's called. Are there others that will enlarge while minimizing resolution loss? The crop is fairly square, so I'll be losing quite a lot of information. I've got a lot of research to do but it's fun. I do appreciate all the suggestions and help. Thanks.

Have a look at Fred Miranda's filters (miranda.com). I use them to upscale images. Looks pretty impressive.

I agree with Dodi, you don't need genuine fractals to do this. The photoshop actions from Fred would do just fine IF you need to enlarge the image any. http://www.photobox.co.uk ( http://www.photobox.ie ) recommends 2000x3000 pixel images for prints up to 20"x30". Talk to the lab doing the work. If they are going to blow it up before sending it to the print then you might want to do it yourself. If they don't and they let the printer do the work then your wasting your time.

Lexar,

I don't think you want to go with GF for something like this. It tends to blend some intersecting lines together. Fred Miranda's actions are based on small, incremental enlargements of around 10% each time, and doesn't have such artifacting. He called the original SI for Stair Interpolation. I think his are now tailored to give specific sizes based on the particular camera that generated the file, while the original free action just did 1, 1.5, 2 and 4x upsizing. You can do this yourself without an action...just upsize about 10% each time until you hit your target size. Automating the process with the action is nice, though, and probably well worth the few bucks he now charges.
