Challenge 1 - CHAT HERE - Insects/small creatures (macro)

Hi Michael and Dave,
I have to disagree. I won't be submitting to this challegne, but I
think the rules must be followed in all cases for consistency.
Otherwise it gives too much power to the people who decide when a
rule must be followed and when it can be broken; no offense to the
two of you.
I think the image should be shrunk down such that the smaller
dimension does not exceed 600 pixels and then posted as a reply to
the original submission. If it doesn't make a difference then
there is no reason not to.
just my 2c
Hi Mark,

I absolutely agree with you in saying that all cases should be dealt consistently. I just felt that since this was the first challenge (and I'm sure the first ones always have a rocky ride!) that a little leniency should be given, just so that people would not be too discouraged and enjoy the starting of the competition more.

And no offence taken! You've provided lots of valuable ideas and feedback that made this challenge possible in the first place!

Hi Cory,

What a great photo! I didn't realise that the guy on the right was actually in the air until I looked closer! (He is, isn't he?) This also is one of the best action shots I've ever seen, as I can imagine how fast that little critter was heading towards the ground.
Great shot!

Yes, he's still airborne.
This

Much too fast to try outguessing a particular wasp. It was a matter of focusing on where they were going to be, then "clicking away" until I happened to catch one. :-)
Great shot!
Thanks!

Best wishes,

Cory

At this point, Cory gets the victory with great color, sharpness,
stop-action,

AND willing to sacrifice his body in the name of the Challenge....

Well Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!

Not much risk to "life and limb" though. Yellow jackets are "old friends." :-)

Best wishes,

Cory

Tonight, I spent some time looking through the entries. I leave tomorrow night for a vacation and I'm taking my new 5700. Unfortunately, right now I'm sicker than a dog, but these entries have inspired me. I'm not one for insects. In fact, I have a standing joke with a coworker of miine (he has a CP990). I've been know to PS bugs OUT of my photos, he does nothing but seek them out.

Some of the work I see here is nothing short of first class. My hat is off to all of you, I've grown a new respect for the 'lil critters of the earth (though, I'm still not gonna go shoot photos of 'em).

hi all!

first of all, many thanx to all those who have contributed to make this challenge possible!

i'm unclear about rule 8:

8. Only the following enhancements can be made to submitted photos:
(snip)

Use of filters such as sharpen, unsharp mask, soften, blur, despeckle, JPG cleanup, and remove noise. These filters should not be used to the extent that they create a non-realistic or artistic effect.

does this include or exclude the use of tools such as mathias vejerslev's de-noise-deluxe, neat-image, and the like? i'm not arguing whether they do more harm than good, i'm not clear about whether they are allowed by the rules. would you please clarify?

cheers,
pns

I also want a clarification on this rule, is it allowed to do partial adjustments using those filters or are they only allowed to do over-all adjustments (which I think should be the rule).

Hello there,

I was thinking that the most important point to the rule was:

"These filters should not be used to the extent that they create a non-realistic or artistic effect."
That is, the filters can be used on different portions of the photo.

However, I think it will be best to get some feedback from others in regards to this rule.
Please list your thoughts!

Hi Mark/Michael,

The idea of three votes seems even better now considering the number of photo entries so far! If we had only five entries for the challenge, I'm not sure the voting system would have worked so well.

I'll make the appropriate updates for the voting rules by Monday.
If you have any other good ideas, please reply by then!

I wonder what others think about this idea?

You could then give two votes to the entry you think should get
1st, and you third vote could go to your second preference.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe.
One possible solution to the problem of wanting to vote for an
"outright 1st" is to not regulate how members use their votes. So,
if you want, you can use all three votes on a single photo.

Hi Sah,

In order for your entry to be valid, please include the ITPC information for your photo entry (ie. date, camera, settings, etc), as well as any modifications you have made to the photo. (As listed in the RULES posting)

Hi Dave,

First, I just want to say thanks for getting things going and for the work you are doing now. I work at home, so I have the opportunity to check DPreview frequently. "News" used to be my first stop, but now I check the Challenge. This is way more exciting than new cameras.

Second, I've seen that you need to keep a constant watch on submissions conforming to the rules. This is great, but it seems like a lot of work for you. I have two suggestions to alleviate this. The first, lets get everyone more involved, if anyone sees a submission that doesn't conform then post it to this thread. I didn't do this because I didn't feel it was my place, but I think if we all started doing it then your life would be easier. If you think this is ok then say so and we can all help. The second, a more heavy handed approach would be to disqualify all submissions that don't comply (in future challenges), but I don't like that idea because this should be fun and friendly.
Thanks again,
Mark
p.s.
you have further reduced my work productivity (can you be sued for that?)

Hi Dave,

I feel a little bad now being the only objection to letting the rules slide in these cases. I expected there would be people weighing in on both sides after my post so we could get a cross-section of users opinions. Clearly, from the current submissions they are spending their time out taking pictures. I guess that is what I should be doing instead of complaining about rules.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Dave and BHennessy,

An easier way to post a resized photo without adding another message to the Submit thread is to...

Re-size the image then upload it to your image gallery, and overwrite your existing image.

Not sure if you can overwrite an existing image on your gallery, but if you can the embedded link in your original Entry will now show the updated (resized) image.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe (co-helper with Challenge 1).
Hi BHennessy,

As there has been a response in regards to the size of your photo
entry, could you please re-enter your photo (Please perform a
follow-up reply on your original thread).
As a guide, the maximum size your photo should be (without
cropping) 647x600.

Hi Alton,

A bit tooooooo close for comfort! Fortunately, the bee was more interested in the flower than me! I'm very impressed with the standard of the photo's here. It's gonna take quite some thinking before I'll be able to decide who to vote for.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Mark,

As the title says, any help would be great! Although some entries have slipped a rule here and there so far, I think the next challenge should be a bit more structured and a bit stricter as you say.

I think it is fair to say that other entrants would expect someone entering the challenge to have read the Challenge Rules, prior to submitting their photos. I think I will make a note on reading the rules a bit more prominent for the next challenge.

If on the other hand someone makes a geniune mistake, of course it's ok for others to bring it up, and give the appropriate directions! This was intended to be the 'Nikon forum member's challenge', and not my challenge! I just (tried to) start something that I knew that many people (including myself!) in this forum wanted/needed. Now I guess it's up to everybody to keep it up, and keep it together!

Aren't some of the entries absolutely stunning??! Hopefully we should see the same quality for the next topic of flowers/plants.

Hello everybody,

It's great to see that the first challenge has started well! I'm sure considering all the great entries, it will be no easy task when it comes to voting.

As the winners will be announced approximately one week from now, I thought this would be a good time to get a list of 10 topics/themes together in which the winner can choose from for the next topic.

Could everyone please think of 5 (FIVE!) topics/themes which you would llike to appear in the challenge by next Friday(Sep 7). Please remember that we are trying to keep the topics/themes as generic as possible, as to give everybody a fair go. Please don't list something too specific, like "horses", "seashells", etc...

The top 10 topics/themes selected will then become the set topics for the next 20 weeks of the challenge.

Thanks for your help!
