... this probably would be my last lens to source to complete my lens collection for the moment. I would use this lens to complement my 28/1.4 and 85/1.4, and mainly use for portriat and everyday scene shots (in both day and night).

I have my default preference set to 50/1.4, but would like to seek further comments on the 45/2.8P because many have reported that it is the outperformer in almost all aspects in image quality though it only supports manual focusing and has a relatively smaller aperture.

Manual focus would be fine to me, the considerations for me would be:
  • how well the 50/1.4 performs wide open between f1.4-f2.8
particularly under low light conditions
  • can the 45/2.8P support all metering modes on my D1x?
Thanks,
GH

The 45/P is the sharpest normal lens at wide apertures. It also has the best defocused character, the greatest resistance to flare, the best shadow detail, the best low level detail other than the 55 Micro or 60 Micro, the best build quality other than the 55 Micro (which is equally-well built), and the best results across the aperture and subject-distance range. It meters in all modes on the D1-series. It matches the character of the 85/1.4D better than any of the normal lenses. 'nuff said?

I've got a 45/2.8P in the mail to me, now. I'm putting my 50 f/1.4 up for sale and will only use my 50 f/1.8 in the future. Ron has got me hooked and it is easy for me to see that he has done his homework. Separately I keep coming up with the same conclusions he has reached.

Thanks again, Ron. (From your Escondido lurker)

Regards,

Paul
I can't believe how much it costs and how small it is! Wishing I
had got one now instead of the 50/1.4 ....

so I finally have a set of lenses that I am in proud of... that would drive me for making better pictures... :D

Thank you...

yes, it also support "D" metering , it have CPU buil in even it is a manual lens.

I have made a tset shot in WingShing with D1X, I like it, it feel like a " build in" lens on D1X. but I still think it "look" best mount on a FM3A or FM2. I think you can also make a test shot with you D1X there .

I have do a test with 50/1.4( my old manual one) and 60mm micro.
50/1.4 is sharper than 60mm micro with full open aperture.

60mm micro is sharper than 50/1.4 in 22 aperture.

Thank you...I decided to acquire a 45/2.8P...:D

By the way, are you a reporter, photographer?

The black one is natively fine with my D1x because they both in black, but the sliver can give some impressive contrast to the whole setup...:D

I think I can only make my decision in this at the last minute when both on hands for testing... :D

GH
I don't like the black one, it didn't have the "light" feeling.

The Nikon 45mm P is a new version of the Nikon 45mm GN from years ago.

The "Guide Number" 45mm would, after you set the GN on the lens, vary the aperture with the focus...creating the correct exposure.
Then auto flash exposure technology, OTF, TTL, appeared.

The 45mmP is a 4 element Tessar design.
With only 8 glass surfaces, it has SUPERB contrast, and sharpness.
At the other end of the scale:
(a 14 element zoom)
ALL zooms suffer from less than stellar contrast (too many surfaces)
Hence, a zoom's less than great shadow detail.
It's the nature of the beast.

The 45mmP is also Flat-field. A great repro copy lens.
Like the 60mm, the 45 P has NO pincusion/barrel distortion.

Thank you... I learnt more....:D

freinds

I don't believe the power of 45p, I brought one a month ago and found that was totally true. I regard no equivalence product on modern canon and contax..

I found the portrait on 5~10 feet at f2.8, on natural light source, it gives me all these lens characteristics. (the best defocused, the greatest resistance to flare, especially 'the best shadow detail' etc).

I brought the f50f1.8 last x'mas and find that it is the best lens for general used, it was sharper than any (my) nikon zoom lens. the 50F1.4 will only benefit on 1/2 stop(F1.4), other than that, not much diff. but heavier and 3 times $.

Last Sunday, I try to shot the 45p on a high contract construction, I find a slightly CA but this is far better than the 60f2.8 marco on the same case.

on my opinion, I would like to hv. 50f1.8 + 45p than a 50f1.4.

Two weeks ago I didn't even know this lens existed. But based on all the discussion here I made my first totally impulse lens purchase. I could have saved around $80 by buying the silver import version. But I couldn't bring myself to do it so I bought the black USA version. Should arrive in the mail by Thursday. Can't wait.

Thank you... there is no question with the 45/2.8p if manual focus is fine for us.

I do have some consideration that if the 50/1.4 would have some better color and contrast than the 50/1.8?
