Yes, you read that right!

As a pro who has been shooting high-end digital for the past 3 years, I now would like to get myself a nice 4MP compact camera for personal use. Something that will easily fit into a pocket or my fly-fishing vest.

One feature that is extremely important to me, besides excellent image quality and optional manual operation, is having a Histogram available. The only compact camera I have found in my research, so far, that has this feature is the Canon S40.

Do any others in this type camera offer a Histogram? If so which ones?

Any other suggestions or things to consider in this price range that you feel is important?

Ralph,

I'm pretty sure the Nikon Coolpix 5000 has a histogram.

Thanks, but way too big and twice what I want to spend.

Ralph,

Have fun with your Camera. If you want to drop this camera in your pocket, be sure to cover the LCD with a PDA protector. Also, read on the canon forum about the S30 vs S40. The S40 has two issues...so called "banding" in dark regions, and lower light sensitiviy than the S30. If you don't need the extra pixels, many people condsider the S30 a better value. If you need the extra 800k pixels, the S40 is great. However, it does have a couple of minor issues that appear to be caused by lower light sensitivity.

Also, I believe Minolta has a pocket 3-4 MP camera available that is full featured. Not sure about histogram, but I think it has it.

Casio 4000 and Toshiba 81 are small 4MP cameras, especially the Toshiba 81. Both of them have the Histogram function and one of them has it in the recording mode (before shooting).

Hey Ralph good to here someone else likes to have a quality camera they can take anywhere. The camera you want is the minolta F100. And yes it has full manaul operation and histograms. Others out there are nice but the F100 at the current pricing cannot be beat. Check it out yourself. Good luck either way there are lots of nice cams out there for us at present. Peter

DaveMart I third that F100 is the way to go

I'd fourth that. For such a small package that's one dang impressive camera. I'm soon getting a pocketable camera myself, and although there are cheaper ones available, I keep coming back to the F100 just because it's so powerful.

There is no such thing as the perfect digital camera, even amongst pro cameras costing a lot more.

Don't worry about tiny details. The S40 has good reviews and is well regarded. If that's the one you like, then buy it and stop worrying about whether it's the "right" choice.

Hi Ralph,

The Nikon Coolpix 4500 may be what you're looking for. It has the histogram feature and the the swivel also allows it to fit in your pocket with no problem.

I've had mine for a while now and love it!

I recently picked up an F100 and it has exceeded my expectations.

The s40 and 4500 are also nice cameras. Definitely hold all of these cameras because they have have quite different feel. All three have good color and full manual controls with histagrams and manual white ballance.

I picked the f100 because it is the only one that fits confortably in my pants pocket. Its the only one of the 3 that has true pocketability for me, but tastes are different.

The canon has raw output, and the nikon can take some great external lenses and a flash, but I chose this as my point and shoot. I still use my SLR when I need bigger prints, more contrast, or better light.

Things I like about the F100:
-Very good color and sharpness to the images
-Full manual control
-Real pocketability in a sturdy body
-Good auto focus, with selectable areas and subject tracking

Things I don't like about the F100

-Speed (all cameras of this class are slow, I think the canon is slightly faster)

-need menus to get to manual controls (this is probably a function of the small size)

-slight color casts (red) in the automatic white ballance. I need to correct some pictures in photoshop, but this is much better than just processing and not scanning and correcting my old 35 mm point and shoot.

-small viewfinder. I am still learning to use the viewfinder. I seem to get extra stuff in the frame, with accurate framing only through the LCD.

-LCD quality, the lcd is good, but gets washed out in bright sunlight. Its definitely managable though.

I'm happy with my choice. I'm sure that in this class the differences between these 3 cameras are a matter of personal taste. Pick the one that feels right to you
