Acer Aspire 1 ( GB memory, 160gb HD, Windows XP)...I've been carrying one around the country for about a year and it great for the cruise we took in the winter. I recommend Picasa, ACDSee or PS Elements. All run well with 1Gb

Hi - go for the Samsung's N110 netbook with memory upgrade to 2gb.
Netbook with excellent specs (probably the finest current netbook around).

Cheers - Herman

I also got the Aspire One, 1 GB ram 160 HD, wifi and I can tether it to my cell phone.

Same crappy 1024x600 display as everyone else.

Is HP the only company making a netbook with a HiRes (1366x786) display?

I highly recommend getting one of the newer 11.6" netbooks, rather than a 10" (or smaller) netbook.
That's the size of a notebook with the power of a netbook. The bigger screen might have an impact on battery life.

is to hit the big vendors and look and touch the netbooks. The specs are pretty much the same and it frequently comes down to how it works for you. The keyboards have difference. On mine there is a button for turning the touchpad on and off and I like that.

But, the machines spec similarly and the prices are similar so play with them and see what you like.
A very nice feature about the ASUS touch pad is the "two finger" touch which will scroll the page up-down and left-right, according to the motion of the two fingers. I don't think any other vendor has this. With one finger, you get the usual pointer movement.
Tap with 3 fingers to right click.

I too have a Lenovo and really like it. I only upgraded the battery however. My sister's Acer has been in the shop three times since I had mine. I have not had a bit of trouble with the Lenovo.

My Asus has 15 increments (16 levels) for brightness adjustment. For indoor use, I rarely need to go above 3.

While it's very nice to have on the road, you don't need Lightroom purely in order to review pictures.
Microsoft RAW Viewer works with Win XP, and free.

WOW you were able to do that without photoshop!!!!

I just bought an Eeee, or whatever the heck it is, I must confess its a brand I've never heard of but it works great. If you are like many of use, go for the slightly more expense jobbie with a 9.5 hour battery (which is a lie, but 8 hours is reasonable). If you're like me, you already own a large desk top, a large lap top, so the small jobbie is great for most tasks and internet access.

I'm a writer but I like to work outside rather than inside. The short battery life on my larger lap top was something like 2.5 hours; I'd just get rolling and the computer would shut down. Now I can go out for four or five hours and plug away and not worry about a dying battery.

If I were to do it again, I noticed Toshiba has a unit out advertising a 9.5 hour battery, I'd get it instead of what I purchased; I just trust the Toshiba name more!

Have no fear; the brand name ASUS is about the most respected maker of main boards and other quality computer components. If you don't deal with computers at the component level, you probably haven't heard of ASUS, but it's a respected company.

I think it is not related to the brand.

System Requirements

Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Professional N; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later is required. This program is not recommended for use on any other version of Windows.

A computer system with at least 256 Mb of RAM and a Pentium III or better CPU is required. For best performance, 512 Mb of RAM and a Pentium 4 or better CPU is recommended.

Version 1.1 of the Microsoft .NET Framework is required. If you download the full setup package, this software will be automatically installed if it is not already present on your system. If you download the small setup package, please be sure that .NET Framework version 1.1 is already installed on your computer before running Setup.

Toshiba used to be great but no so lately. Check up on their recent actual user reviews. I am also speaking from personal experience.

I'm happy to be wrong if something I purchased is better quality than I thought, so I'm glad my Eeee or whatever computer it is, is better possibly than the Toshiba. I find that laptops - for me - are better smaller than larger. If watching DVD's a larger screen is definitely better, for sheer lugging around, I prefer a smaller footprint and weight. I just discovered for $35 I can upgrade the memory card from one gig to two which is what I'll probably do

The memory card receptacle doesn't seem to be working that great, I put an SD card (not SDHC) that was two gig and it wouldn't load into Picassa3, though I could get it to load but not store, using a windows program. I'm not to upset by this as I need a card reader to download my SDHC card I use with my with my 450D, and the little jobbie doesn't handle the card from my 300D, so I'll be using a USB based card reader.
