5DMKII beach/swimsuit shoot, 2 PW TT5s, 17-40L, 50L, 135L (pics)

I was under the possibly mistaken impression that José was showing some examples of his use of the FlexTT5's & 580's in an outdoor setting. This is opposed to a feeling that some feel it was a photo contest or to answer the question, "is this a perfect photo?", which I personally do not believe was his intent.

I appreciate José's postings and have been following him for a while. I like his work and appreciate his sharing. I also think he has been very gracious in his responses.

I also have TT5's (four of them) and initally before that last FW update had some issues with misfires and full discharges, but none lately. I am interested in looking at his work to see the lighting, not so much the composition, etc.... A lot of which is personal taste.

I personally like these forums, despite some of the critics, as it is a great setting to learn from others, the good and the bad.

Whether that comment is true or not is of course debatable. However, it does make me think about this:

What if those pictures were of a woman (or a man) who is not attractive? What if the subject were a dog, or a child? Would the pictures get the same amount of compliments? In other words, who or what is getting the compliments, the pretty girl in a bikini, or the skill of the photographer? And what if they had been shot with a different brand/model camera? How about a point and shoot?

Think about it. All of you.

If you really want to help, please provide specific, clear, constructive criticism - you did none of this with your post.

If you have suggestions on how to improve the post-, describe them.

If you have suggestions on posing or lighting, describe them.

The three examples posted by Jose are nicely lit, reasonably posed... processing and capture style are as good as any I have seen on these boards.

S.
Actually, your post is the trollish one. Joe has every right to express his opinion about the pictures. Just because you like them doesn't mean he has to, and he certainly doesn't have to meet your demands about what he should say or how he should say it.
hi natureman. i see your sticking your nose into threads that dont involve you again. so, the troll is you . you are trolling the forums for another argument, arent you? why else are you posting here, especially since you offered no assistance to the original poster? oh, i know why, because you are a troll .

(i know, i know, your personal stalker, right?) when your trolling behavior is pointed out, you cry like a little baby and yell, stalker, stalker.

would it have been so tough to just butt out of this thread? nooooooooooooooo, you had to have your say, didnt you?

Here's the full Swmsuit shot:

Here's the cropped version:

You can see the two catchlights. Like I said, I just position the umbrellas to either side of the model so she can move around and I don't have to move lighting stands often.

Cheers,

José
Thanks Jose. If I may ask another question ... what was the settings on the flashes ?

I am afraid you are hugely overestimating your skills Jose.

The photo's you show do not qualify to me as 'pro'.

In fact your photo's do as commented before really look a bit 'cheap' in the sense of the feel you give them. Not said that you photo's aren't good lit. They are.

But its the models that show they are not pro's.

So I agree with Photo_Joe and Chirebel

There is more to a photo then pressing the shutter button.

There are just more skills needed to be qualified as a good photographer then having good equipment.

Call me a troll, but I am sure you will not be able to sell these pictures to any (advertising) agency nor convince any art director with these pictures to hire you as a 'pro' photographer.

Sorry Jose, French is my main language and the words I used were probably incorrect. What I was looking for was if the flashes were on manual or ETTL ... and if ETTL, any compensation ? If manual, the ratio ?

Thanks in advance.

Pierre

Sounds like you have a plan, keep at.

My favorite is RIMG_7760.jpg. Maybe the face angle could be have been less straight horizontal. But that's minor quibble.
To each their own but I am not a huge fan of Victoria Secret swimsuit, I prefer SI and I even bought a few mags during the shoot. However, I really love Roberta's expressions because they come so naturally. Plus love her clothes and accessories. She love it too and wanted to schedule another shoot. To top it all, she referred me to a friend. So I guess it wasn't too shabby :-)

Cheers,

José
This particualr series however is not too shabby!

Hi Pierre,

I shoot ETTLII with these new Pocket Wizards. I have yet to shoot manual flash with it. My settings would depend on the lighting situation and etc. If the lighting is challenging (I like to shoot with the sun behind the model), I take a meter and shoot with manual exposure. Still my flash is at ETTLII and most often at HSS.

I would use compensation if there is a need for it like the flash causing washouts and etc. If that is the case I will dial down. Very seldom I have the need to dial up flash exposure.

Hope that answers your question.

Cheers,

José

Thanks for your comments.

First of all when I shoot I shoot for me and the model. However, on a few occasions I have been approached by aspiring designers and etc. More often that not I had to say no because they want someone who is flexible to do shoots during the day (I can't because of my full-time job).

I am a free-flowing photographer so I like the models to express their personalities and etc. I don't call for a lot of expressions----plus I like the expressions to be as natural as possible. The models give me a lot of eye contact most of the time since I shoot for the model's portfolio. If this was a shoot for a designer then most of the time I will ask them to look away. Plus I like smiling models anyway :-)

For beach shoots I like SI-style and if you look at SI swimsuits either the model is smiling or giving a sultry look. This works great for me because I don't like overly artisitc images to begin with. My models know these and for the newbie ones I work with I encourage them to work with various type of photographers to have different styles.

Regarding Roberta's shoot---------I absolutely love her expressions. I did not have to show her my three ring binder with SI shoots and images from my iPod touch. So we are completely on the same page. As a matter of fact, I am getting kudos from models whom I have never worked with on my Facebook acct. I even got a referral from Roberta herself who by the way has been referred to me as well.

So to each their own. Still thanks for your comments.

Best regards,

José

That's exactly what I was trying to convey. I know people have different tastes and etc. and all of these are intensively subjective.

I truly welcome all comments even the troll ones. It's an internet world and just as people have the right to voice their opinions I have the right as well to pick and choose which suggestions/advice I would like to implement.

This is my seventh year in Dpreview so I've read all type of comments. My favourites are the ones offering financial advice and etc. like spend money on something else and etc. Also a few years ago there were more pics of beautiful and sexy women posted here. Man, there were a lot of heated discussions. I kinda like it because I was shooting with a different camera system at that time thus these type of threads stayed longer on the front page thus I was able to check out the images of my favourite Canon shooters. This is the main reason why I shoot with Canon right now.

To some people I will not reply at all------the ignore list works!!!!!! :-)

Best regards,

José

Actually, no one "knows" any such thing, especially since Michael and I are not the same person. Nice try though. Better luck next time.

feel free to say what you want, but your typed words are dead giveaways. plus it is easy to see that you and michael never post photos, and always post in the same forums and usually post to each other. and the other dead giveaway is the only person that likes each other, is each other........lol.

so, you are not fooling anyone.

i will let others decide by reviewing the posting histories of adverse camber and colossus if they think those two (now banned members) have any coincidence to the two of you also. i think they dooooooooo.
