Just playing around.

Not as good as with a filter, but not too bad either.

Melanie,

I did some work with it in PS. The reason for the whited out background is because of the fog. It was quite a foggy morning. This was perhaps not the best of photos to manipulate.

I really liked your gallery. I especially liked the angel with the cross; although they were all very nice.

I found this $8.00 IR filter for the PS.

There is a demo for download on the end of the page.

Even with the fog, I suspect the backgroung would be dark if you had used an R72 filter. It could be done in Photoshop but it would be a real grind to select the sky inclusive of the little pieces between tree branches(there really are ways to do that!) Nice photo but NOT infrared.

There are some infrared shots in one of my galleries which Illustrate the white foliage, Black skies etc.

howie,

Thanks for the comment. I agree there's nothing like the real thing. You have the D7 and you can use the filter. I have the D7i and it won't work with it. I just recently tried to create the effect in PS.

I like your infared gallery and also you did a very fine job on the Chinese Opera.

I miss the ability to shoot IR with my D7i (so I continue to use my Oy 2100 for IR). I've tried numerous filters, actions, channel mixture layers, etc. and haven't come quite as close as you. Any chance you would post the step you've taken to get the foilage so light? I would certainly appreciate it.

Mary,

I create a duplicate layer and in the channel mixer, I use from top to bottom, roughly –20, 200, -80, (it varies for photo – that’s a good starting point) and then click monochrome. I create a duplicate layer and then select screen on that layer and then apply a glossian blur that varies depending on file size. After doing the blur that works the best, you should take the opacity slider and move it until you get the effect that best suites your needs. I found the instructions somewhere online for the above. I also found out by trial and error since the post of my photos, that if you have a blue sky you should darken it to almost a black to create in the final a look that more represents IR photography. I imagine you know how to do that. If not, let me know and I can explain how I do it. I’m sure there are many ways of doing it; PS has usually at least 3 ways to do everything.

Hope this helps,

Here's a sample of the second phase that I mentioned. It's the same as the photo from above only with the darkened sky.

Thanks for your comment!

I've been wondering. If the inability to shoot IR in the D7I due to the inclusion of a hot mirror (IR elimination filter) what is the plus side? Does inclusion of that filter mske for better color? Is it a protective device? I'm told CCD's are not happy when pointed toward strong sources of IR. Anyone have a definitive answer as the above is just my conjecture?
