Challenge 1 - CHAT HERE - Insects/small creatures (macro)

  • Thread starter Thread starter Michael Offe
  • Start date Start date
Those first 2 entries set the bar pretty high! I'm afraid that going for higher quality is out of the question. At this point my only hope is to have more interesting subject matter. :-)

As it happens, I have been photographing a lot of insects; no particular reason except that they come in such as huge variety. And let's face it -- you can get an up-close look with the photo without really putting your face at risk!
These first entries are tough!! I don't even think I'll enter, my
uhhh, camera is uhhhh sick. yea, it's not feeling well. :)

Hate to be a spoil sport, but the dates on one of the challengee's is from July:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=3267162

See MarcV. Not sure if it is a typo/wrong camera date, but we have to figure out if we are going to be hard and fast on the date limits for the pictures since we all have great photos lurking in our past (hopefully :)
Hi all,
I decided to add this thread so that we can have a place to chat
about entries.
It will also allow us to keep the info about the Challenge on the
1st page of the Forum, otherwise in between entries being posted in
the "Challenge Submit" thread, it is likely to slip back to the 2nd
or 3rd pages of the Forum.

To enter the Challenge or read the rules click this link...
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=3261963

I think it is OK for us to discuss entries before voting... don't
think it creates any problems with the rules. (If it does you'd
better let me know)

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe (little elf helper with this first Challenge) ;-)

It certainly makes sense to me that people should be able to contribute pictures from their archives. If they don't think one of those is good enough, then they should go out and shoot another. Why is it that we have to have the picture taken in the competition time period? This also alleviates problems because a certain season is conducive to a particular kind of picture (e.g. winter and you have to shoot an insect).

I agree as well it makes not so much sense to me either.

Challenges in other forums often have 2 categories. In the first and official category, you have to restrict yourself to the prescribed time frame. In the second one, you can pick a picture from your archive. That might be a solution here.

But I must admit that I like the idea of having a time frame. It looks more like a "challenge" that way. You have to produce something original even with respect to yourself and your previous work.

I agree, if we allow archived images then it slants the playing field toward people who haev been doing this longer.

Steve and Sid:

At first blush, that was my opinion too, why not allow people to enter older shots? But, as I thought about it, and reflected on what I had read about the real purpose of these contests, I decided that maybe it was a good idea to limit the time frame for the date of the photo.

The spirit and intent of the contest is to (pardon my paraphrasing, taking this from memory) "encourage people to go out and shoot more with their CPs." Resting on your laurels and submitting that killer photo that you shot last year that just HAPPENS to fit the category du jour, minimizes the intent: give someone an incentive to go out and shoot photographs with a specific assignment in mind.

I like the idea, the more that I think about it, though I have to admit, it may be cumbersome to enforce. Marc's shot it a GREAT shot, but if it doesn't fit the rules, it doesn't fit.

You're soooo right!! And its got COLD too! We've had one of the mildest, driest winter's for ages with lovely clear skies, warm days etc. Now we have this comp and the temp has dropped 5-6 deg C, pouring with rain, and all the bugs have taken shelter. Mind you, Dave, the winter has been so mild that we've got lots of flowers out up on the Central Coast. Oh well, we've got a few more days yet to see if we can find some crawlies.

Darren
Can you believe that it hasn't rained here in Sydney for the past 1
1/2 months, and now that the comp has started, it started to rain
today!!! With winter and rain, I don't know where I'm going to find
these little buggers. I haven't seen a fly for the past 3 months!

And can u believe what the next topic is? ... FLOWERS!!!

Just musing...

Sorry Marc, I feel really bad for pointing it out. I was just trying to get it sorted out as I have this cool bug from july as well that I would have loved to put in. But, I understand the other side as well. Did you stick that bee in your freezer for a while? (I understand that some people do this). If so, then you can go and take another picture of it :)

Hello Frank,

I have no problem with whatever policy is decided upon. I do know that the EXIF header is a very easy thing to edit, and in fact we are not even checking original camera files. I guess it's on your honor then?

I like the idea of having another reason to get out and take more photos, but I think you are kidding yourselves if you don't think archived files are going to make their way in here...

At any rate, I have archives of scorpion pictures, but I forced the kids to get out last night and catch a couple more so I can get the picture within the rules here.

Hi Dave,
Since this is the first Challenge, and their are so many rules to remember...
and Mark made an honest mistake...

Would it be OK for him to re-enter with a new entry from the correct date period?

I don't think anyone else will get it wrong after all this discussion over Mark's problem.

If we allow Mark to re-enter, we will have to write a BIG notice here on this thread for people to triple check the rules before they enter... since they could/will be disqualified.

What do you think?

Yours sincerely,

LOL!!!!!!!!!! Wait a sec here, what's wrong with this picture? Dad says to the kids "Kids, you go out now and risk your necks to catch some SCORPIANS, so Dad can safely take some pictures after you've captured them."

and you're right about how data can be faked..but then, we're not exactly offering a free trip to Photo Heaven to the winner, are we?

Hey, I got it..how about a free subscription to DP Review??

Hi Michael/Mark,

Sure thing! I (and I'm sure everybody) have absolutely no objection to it. This is a friendly challenge!

I'm sure if you (Mark) can take a great picture like that one time, you'll be able to do it again.

Just post a follow-up (reply) after Marks first entry stating not to vote for that one, but for the second entry he has made (If he is going to enter in another photo that is).

As for my email address, it's:
[email protected]

It's good to see that the competition is going well! I must admit I'm a little overwelmed by the high quality of entrants... and worst yet, it's still raining in Syndey!!!

I admit that's what I was thinking why not dive into the archive
but on further reflection somebody had said " It wouldn't be a
challenge then" kind of sunk in and I've come to the conclusion
that the time frame is probably a good idea.

Ps; Where the heck is that exif editor when you need it LOL..

Please feel free to enter a new photo in the Challenge.

Your first incorrect entry will just be ignored when it comes time to vote.

I am very interested in what your new entry will be... your first photo was GREAT!
