Hi all,
I decided to add this thread so that we can have a place to chat about entries.

It will also allow us to keep the info about the Challenge on the 1st page of the Forum, otherwise in between entries being posted in the "Challenge Submit" thread, it is likely to slip back to the 2nd or 3rd pages of the Forum.

To enter the Challenge or read the rules click this link...
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=3261963

I think it is OK for us to discuss entries before voting... don't think it creates any problems with the rules. (If it does you'd better let me know)

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe (little elf helper with this first Challenge) ;-)

Hi Petra,

Congratulations on the posting the very first entry, to the very first NTF Challenge ever!!!

You just made history!

Hi Michael,

First, thank you for getting this first challenge posted, for contributing the use of your website and all your hard work.

Second, question: why does this challenge go from last friday until a week from monday (this is three weeks)? The same will be so for the next challenge, I assume. We won't have the topic for the third challenge next friday, will we?

I should read the rules again, but it easier to just ask: for the standard challenge (the beginning ones could be different) what is timeframe in which the pictures must be taken?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Hi Michael,
First, thank you for getting this first challenge posted, for

Second, question: why does this challenge go from last friday until
a week from monday (this is three weeks)? The same will be so for
the next challenge, I assume. We won't have the topic for the
third challenge next friday, will we?
For Challenge 2, the Topic was announced today, and photos taken from today until 10 days after next Friday will be eligible.

This gives you a total period of 24 days from which to pick your photo.

The rules were changed from the original 10 day period for eligible photos, to the current 24 days, because people didn't want too tight a time limit, in case of bad whether etc.

This is why photos taken anytime from last Friday through until Monday week are eligible for Challenge #1.
I should read the rules again, but it easier to just ask: for the
standard challenge (the beginning ones could be different) what is
timeframe in which the pictures must be taken?
Hope this explains it.

I must go to bed now...
Goodnight,
Michael Offe.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Michael,

Actually the rules made me a bit worried, it never said anything about rotating the image in the right direction.... but I asumed it was ok giggles

I was lucky, I normally don't photograph small creatures like that, I HATE THEM! I was lucky because it was during the correct time frame since I took it last weekend. Normally I don't spend much time around bugs and flowers etc. But it's going to be fun to be part of the challenge and also photograph stuff I don't normally do. FUN!

I feel very historical.... NOT... maybe pre-historical laughs

I also must say that since Nikon Europe posted the update for the Auto White balance on the 995 it's been alot more fun to photograph, it's very seldom I have to actually do any white balance adjustmets anymore. Thanks Nikon!

Hugs to Michael (and anyone else that likes hugs),
Petra

Hi there Michael,

Firstly, a big thank you for getting the challenge started!

Your ideas of setting up the rules with the SUBMIT thread and starting this new comments thread was great! More heads to do the thinking the better...

I just had a new thought this morning about the voting system, after hearing about the Bulldogs losing all their points (believe it or not!).

As it might be difficult for people to choose only one definate winner, how about a point system which allows for three votes; first, second and third.
First could equal 5 points, second 3, and third 1.

I realise that this would be 200% more difficult to add up the votes/points, but maybe it would be a bit fairer for photos that deserve a lot of merit! And also it could solve the problem of choosing between two really close entries.

Maybe just first and second, and no third for voting? Yours or anyones opinion would be great!
I could also quickly write up a spreadsheet to make the counting a lot easier.

It's great to see that some people have already entered in their photos.

Hopefully a lot more memebers will start to embrace the challenge...!

Hi Dave,

I don't have an opinion on whether to use a point system of not, but one way to more easily accomplish a point like system would be to allow more than one vote per person, say three, as you suggest. This would make it easier to decide and then the photo with the most votes would be first in the end still.

Hi Mark,

That sounds much much simpler! I got the idea of points from the recent World Cup and the national rugby leagues (3 points for win, 1 piont for draw, etc).
Three votes per member sounds good...
Opinions anyone?

Hi Dave,
Sounds like that could work.

Only thing is you can't vote on an outright 1st... but then again, we are likely to get so many images of equal quality, maybe it isn't a problem.

Hi everyone,

I just posted my first ever picture and straight into a competition! Great fun and I'm really looking forward to seeing more photo's. Thanks to everyone who put in all the hard work to get this started.

Hi Michael,

Maybe the perfect solution to voting will pop up by the 2nd Sep. I like the idea of 3 votes (to give credit to other good pictures), but I also like the idea of picking my favourite pic!

Suggestions from other people would be great!

Can you believe that it hasn't rained here in Sydney for the past 1 1/2 months, and now that the comp has started, it started to rain today!!! With winter and rain, I don't know where I'm going to find these little buggers. I haven't seen a fly for the past 3 months!

And can u believe what the next topic is? ... FLOWERS!!!

Just musing...

Hi Rob,

Great Photo! I can't believe the quality of all the photos that have been already posted... I'm already feeling the pressure to go and find a nice looking critter, and then take the perfect photo to match it!

Oh really!

Sorry but I just don't buy it!

But... you know the contest goes for another 9 days, and I heard some place that you may have a new toy to play with by then...

...so guess what you can try it out on.

Nothing like a good o'l Challenge to break in a new camera!

:-)

Have fun with your new camera!

I am also wondering what I should choose for my subject... I must admit the competition sure is strong! :-)

Yours sincerely,

One possible solution to the problem of wanting to vote for an "outright 1st" is to not regulate how members use their votes. So, if you want, you can use all three votes on a single photo.
Hi Dave,
Sounds like that could work.

Hi Mark,
That sounds like it could solve it, and it would be easy to add up the votes.

I wonder what others think about this idea?

You could then give two votes to the entry you think should get 1st, and you third vote could go to your second preference.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe.

Exactly, an the flexibility gives a little more power to your votes, that is if you choose to put all three votes in one place you really have an effect.
I wonder what others think about this idea?

1st, and you third vote could go to your second preference.
