It's just not for me.

I spent a weekend away with it and was just too disapointed with it's slow performance.

You just don't have the control like you do with other cameras. It's just too "point and shoot" for me.

Think I'll stick with my Nikon D5000 and D3 and use the money to get a new lens.

Oh, and I have to say that the Fl-14 flash for the E-P1 is horrible! It's all over the place with exposure! I would not recommend that flash for this camera.

Looks like I fall into the "not for everybody" catergory.

Take care.

I to am a Nikon DSLR user for us it is the D70, D70S and D200 and more then a few lenses. I was looking to replace my Canon G5 for a have with me all the time and NY City walk around for me it more then fits the bill.

I'm also OK with the Auto Focus speed but I did not get it for shooting sports or fast kids but AF single focus is pretty fast for me

It is the first camera that I fell comfortable shooting JPG the Oly engine is fantastic. The only thing I miss is a VF but I'm learning to work without one.

Can't speak to the flash issue I have a SB800 but for my style I don't use it much, I like available light fast lenses better. From the reviews I would tend to think that your correct it does not seem to be very good but I love the the 2 little words "3rd Party" that do seem to tilt for bonce and give the power. Do SB's work on the E-P1 in manual mode?
So for each his own if a tool is not right don't use it.

Yeah, it's not the perfect camera for everyone. I love mine, but it certainly wouldn't be for me if I were using it as my only camera. I wanted a small, compact camera with good image quality that I could take for shots of friends and events in natural light (acceptable high ISO) without having to haul my SLR kit with me. It's perfect for that. I've got a Voigtlander Nokton 40 f/1.4 coming tomorrow, and I'll likely replace my 17/2.8 with the 20/1.7 when it comes out (depending on price), but then those two lenses will be pretty much all I use on the E-P1....a wide normal for general shooting, a short telephoto for portraits and such. I'll keep the kit zoom for times I want something wider or a single lens solution, but for the most part that'll be it. I MIGHT, if I grow to really love using it, get the 7-14 and 45-200, and then I'll carry those four lenses as a nice travel kit.

However, for any serious work, for shots of my daughter (who runs around like a crazy woman), for sports, etc...my 1Ds II and bag of glass will still be by far what I reach for. And that's OK, because I didn't buy the E-P1 to replace it...I bought it for times when a 3lb body and heavy lenses are inconvenient.

I am so torn on getting one.

I am going on a monthlong trip to India and am looking at a second body, backup, take everywhere cam and the EP-1 seems to fit the bill. I have tried one in store, not thrilled at the AF, but like everything else I see, including the video option.

I would have to sell a lens to pick up an EP-1, but I am beginning to tip towards selling my lovely Tokina 11-16, leaving the 40D at home and travelling with the 5D 24-105 and EP-1 combo. I just look at my proposed heavyyyyy camera gear bag that I would be dragging all over India and think the EP-1 may be the ticket to a simpler, lighter load.

But then I see so many people say they are passing on the EP-1.

So torn. There is one on hold for me in-store if I want it tomorrow....

I wouldn't dismiss m4/3 entirely - since the E-P1 is just Oly's first attempt, and as the system matures, many more options will become available.

I haven't seen reports of disatisfaction with the G1 - I have that cam myself, and I have no real complaints. On CF the blackout between frames means its not an "action" cam, but I would use my E30 for that in any case, and low light EVF quality is poor.

E-P1 is obviously going to suit many, and sell very well, but based on some of the initial enthusiastic reports, I sense that a sizeable number of experienced users had higher expections. I don't see that seasoned users of quality DSLR's should be given excuses for poor AF performance, and here Oly have done themselves no good whatsoever. I sampled an E-P1 last week in France, and compared directly with the G1 they had there, and that short session confirmed those same AF speed issues ... for me anyway!

Your report on the FL-14 sounds a bit alarming as well!

with the panasonic 20mm 1.7 can i take a shot that now is at iso 1600 and 1/15s with kit lens and with the new lenses is it possibl to take theshot at iso 200 1/15 or 1/60 at iso 1600????

how much more ev compared with my e-p1 kit lens?f1.7 vs 3.5

While the E-P1 is for me, but the FL-14 flash is hopeless. The exposure is inconsistent, and in the end, it was 'Auto' that got me better results.

I feel that Olympus need to fix this asap.

Pictures always should have a special story behind it or a special meaning to the photographer.

It's taken me a little bit to learn the new menu system, but the camera is easily as configurable as an entry-level dSLR, which makes since given it comes from the E-620.

I find it's performance in low light as good as any P&S, but with very nice high ISO performance like you'll get with a entry to mid range dSLR.

Very interesting, I have the FL-14 Flash (kept it after I sold the EP-1) and it works great on the G1 in TTL, and LX3 in Manual Mode

Problem could be at the EP-1 side of the link maybe? If so a firmware upgrade will fix it.

Is a very handy size to carry around, that is the main reason I kept it.

Sell the FL14 and get the FL36. It is not much heavier, still light enough to carry, and is a MUCH, MUCH better flashgun because it tilts and swivels. More powerful too. The only advantage of FL14 is that it matches the camera. Big deal...

Hey, I understand your pain. I'm also going on a 3 week trip to the Philippines in a few months! I'm in a slightly different situation...I already have an Oly DSLR and 4 of the 4/3rds lenses....so it compliments my kit and gives me a nice back up body, video, and better low light performance.

I find the AF to be ok...my only real complaint is that I'd like the center point (I only use the center AF point) to be a bit smaller...it seems to get confused sometimes on what it's focusing on. But, like any tool....I simply try to learn it's idiosyncrasies and work with them.

I think there are as many...or more..that are very pleased with it!

Good luck with your trip!

Yep - that is what I find also. It is just not sensitive enough. But it is good enough if I am careful.

This is my thoughts. I don't have the FL14 but I do have the FL20 and the FL36R and with both of them the flash exposures are very inconsistent - usually leaning towards over exposure. Hopefully a firmware fix will take care of it.

It "is" good enough...but perhaps I'm used to the 510 in low light..which is not a particularly good performer. Other people may come from Canon and Nikon and expect much better performance. Again...in low light, where you are shooting wide open....focus will be more critical...during the day in good light...bump up the aperture and shoot away. I don't find many problems in good light...and in low light I compensate by picking an object that is right by my subject (like say, some of the pics I've taken of the Blues performers) and then wait for the right moment to shoot the picture. Seems to work ok.

Nope! Its not you. Its the crappy FL14. I have the same issues.

If Oly doesn't fix the exposure issue with firmware, it'll be a bad name for future sales.

Ask not what your equipment can do for you. Ask what you can do with your equipment!

It's just not for me.
Obviously not, but I do not know why you bought it to begin with?

One weekend is a very thorough test run, glad to see you spent a lot of time getting a feel for the camera. I am confused what was so slow about the camera.
You just don't have the control like you do with other cameras. It's just too "point and shoot" for me.
What controls are you missing? For me it works like most any other camera, focus, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, etc

it is the emergency flash, what would one expect, people complain about the lack of a built-in flash, that would be even worse
Looks like I fall into the "not for everybody" catergory.
yes you do, along with a bunch of others
