I have always thought about getting a G9 or G10 as a travel camera and this video showing how this guy uses the G9 to produce amazing picture have always gotten into me! http://www.digitalphotoshopretouching.com/video-samples/shoot1/vid1.htm

And today, with a great price of $425cad and impulse buying, I have order myself a G10....

I have always been a Nikon user and this will be my first Canon.... by all means, I always promote myself as a guy that is not brand originated... So I had no issue getting a Canon... but it would of been nice to be able to use my SB800 flash on a P/S with TTL... not the case with G10... but not a deal breaker...

So my question will be, how do you guys like this camera? I understand the chance of a newer G11 is coming, but than, I won't like the price tag! As well, anyone try using this camera with SB800 or SB80DX ?? These are the flash I have and I believe it will work! Just not as automatic as one would prefer...

Anyways, I can't wait till it arrive!

It is a fine camera and you should love it. If you want any settings for the Contrast, Saturation and Sharpness ask here or email me. I will be glad to help you any time. Good luck!

I too am a Nikon DSLR user, but also have the powershot G7 which still performs great. I would invest in a Canon TTL flash like the 270 EX at the very least. I would want to take full advantage of the technology (which I did). The SB800 is a big flash and really top heavy for this P&S. The 430 ex or the 270 ex is perfect for the "G" camera.

I personally have always liked Nikon for a SLR and since Nikon changed or just did something with the way they manufacture their P&S's today I think Canon is the way to go. Right now I don't need to upgrade my P&S and will wait a bit for the G11 or G10s or what ever the next one will be. If I recall Canon is working on a newer IS (VR) technology that may be in the newer camera's too.

I've had the G10 for about a month, and love it. I also purchased the Canon 270 flash, and it's really worth the 150 bucks. The size is perfect, and the ability to bounce off the ceiling is very convenient. I would be interested and contrast, sharpness, etc. settings that a prior poster mentioned.

I use my SB600 on my G10 with great results. As others have said, it is a bit top heavy. Canon's 270EX would be a great companion for the G10. Hoping Santa will bring one.

I have best luck with Contrast and Saturation set to -1 and Sharpness left at 0. Those have been my settings since November and the only thing I would mention other than those is keep the EC at -1/3 . Good luck!

I have the contrast set to -2 (the minimum setting - don't have the camera in front of me) to get a little more dynamic range out of it as it blows highlights a lot. Often I also underexpose by -1/3 to save even more highlights, especially in contrasty shots.

I've tried so many settings and what I mentioned here suit me best. I always keep EC on -1/3. The light from where we live makes a difference in highlights I think, but if exposed for them as best as possible gives me greater opportunity to get by best.

I've had the G10 about two months and like it more each time I take it out. I also like Nikon for DSLRs (D40) but Canon for the smaller cams. The dedicated knobs are great and the screen is the best around. I've had all kinds of cameras since '02 and the G10 is clearly my favorite all around. I will be getting the dedicated flash for it.

Don't know why Nikon can't seem to match Canon on the P/S line. My first two digitals were the Nikon 995 and 4500 respectively and I loved them. After that I went with Sony and Canon. Not that they make a bad camera, they just don't measure up to Canon IMO.

How is the accuracy of the G10's viewfinder? When you focus on the center of your subject, does the picture show the same spot you aimed at? Is it centered on the object of your focus.?

Hi rkhndjr - regarding the settings you listed. Do you mean that you keep these settings for most shots (indoor, outdoor)? I am a new user and trying to learn how the settings work on the camera. Thanks.

I just picked up the 270EX and it's a perfect fit for the G10. It's pretty powerful for it's size and is very light. I now have it tucked into a Lowepro bag that perfectly fits this, the G10, and an extra battery for travelling. What a great combo!

I have the Apex 100 AW, but I just ordered the Lensmate adapters so I may have to move up to my Rezo 140 AW in order to fit everything in. I like the Apex for it's size and there are 110, 120, etc versions too, but I don't want to buy any more bags!

--The viewfinder is slightly off center but not enough to be problematic on most shots. Once you see which direction it shifts you can easily compensate. For me it has never been a problem.

I bought a G10 last November, and I have been very happy with it.

I used to shoot with SLRs and rangefinders on film before, and I was looking for a camera that is small so that I can take with me everywhere, full manual controls and good image and build quality. Obviously, no camera is perfect and for example the Panasonic LX3 has a slightly faster lens and wider angle, which would have suited my style of shooting better. However, in terms of handling I liked the G10 better. Do I have regrets? Of course, but I would have them even if I had gotten any other camera.

The controls on the G10 are superb. The dedicated ISO and exposure compensation wheels are really nice to have and I use them frequently. It would feel really frustrating to go back to a camera where you have to dig throgh various menus to change these. Also, the basic control wheel is also great. It makes changing the shutter speeds and apertures really easy and appealingly similar to the manual controls of my old film cameras. Also, build quality is excellent. The camera feels sturdy and solid, again like an old film rangefinder.

Image quality wise I have no complaints. Sure, sometimes the camera blows highlights or pictures taken in low light have much noise. But then again, which other compacts doesn't do this?

I have had the camera with me on a longer trip to Amsterdam and Berlin as well as on a month long backpacking trip to Russia and Mongolia, and I absolutely loved it. Small and light weight, always with me. This was a good thing in Ulaanbaatar, which is said to be a city full of pickpockets (I didn't encounter any!), since I could keep the camera under my shirt, but ready for action.

Also, the Lensmate adapter and polarizer filter are great. When out on the field, the adapter and polarizer also protect the lens from bumps and dust, although they reduce the compactness of the camera.

If you know the G10's limitations, I'd say you won't be disappointed with it.

Cheers,
Tuomas

@ kellymac60

Thanks. It's just I'm used to viewfinders of DSLRs. I find it comfortable to use the viewfinder rather than the LCD display.

@ all

Any users having problems with dust getting inside their G10s specially in their sensors? I've read somewhere that a lot of owners have been complaining about dust getting in their sensors.
