Noticed that occasionally, when doing a half-press on the release button, the EVF will very momentarily "flash" pure white - almost as if the flash has gone off (it hasn't :). I know the EVF will momentarily change it's apparent brightness level during this process, and it's not that - it's a very short whiteout effect.

Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I notice that on mine also, only in autofocus mode. It seemed like it made a little sound also. I thought it was a prefocus flash (it does it only with the flash down!) I shoot mostly in manual focus, so I haven't worried about it too much. I though I'd wait to see if anything else went wrong before I sent it back. Also Qimage Pro reports in exif that flash was on wether or not the flash was used!. Exifer report light source as flash when not using flash outdoors and light source unknown with using flash indoors!

Pre-focus flash - that's an excellent description! Yes, that is exactly what it's like, but the flash is down. I've not worried about it really - but it does seem like a glitch in the software.

is it in low light conditions? after the flash do you have the amplified low light black and white image in the EVF?

Pretty much random as far as I can tell. Sometimes it does it, sometimes not. Don't think it's related to low level light, but I'll try and see if they are related next time I'm using it.

Mine does it in full daylight. If I pop up the flash for fill, then it does not do it.

I'm under the impression that not all programs can read all the Exif info correctly. For a picture taken without flash, Photoshop 7 shows flash as "undefined", Breezebrowser shows it as "on", ACDSee shows it as a number, which is 16. DIVU shows it correctly as "NO, flash cancel".
As for the viewfinder going white, I have not seen this with my D7i.

Try upgrading the firmware. I upgraded this morning and tried the camera about 30-40 times, no flash in EVF! The autofocus seems a little quicker also.

Dave,

I updated when it was released. I've just been on a trip to Venice, took a couple of hundred shots - the flash occurred a couple of times still - bright daylight.

I've noticed no difference to autofocus at all. Contrast seems slightly lower. Whereas before I was running at -1, I'm now finding that those pictures are a bit too flat, so I've reverted to 0.
