Have you culled your website lately?

I was just thinking its about time to dig deep and remove some of my lesser shots ferom the website; I have a real problem with posting too many mediocre shots and it tends to overflow my website.

I know its a little past Spring Cleaning time but I thought maybe some folks out there might like a little memory jog...

Don't forget to cull your sites to keep just your best stuff out there!

And of course a new Startrail to share. This shot was taken in one of my favorite Oregon places, the Alvord Desert. This is my Subaru Forester which I absolutely adore; she gets me to all of these wondrous places safe and sound.

1DsII - 24-70 - about an hour and 15 minute exposure

Yeah... I found your post to be pretty boring too...odd though that you felt the need to put yourself down...

Oh were you referring to MY post; the one at the beginning that sort of relied on other people's thoughts and actions surrounding their own websites to make this thread interesting?

Damn, I should have known that if it doesn't have to do with Electrical Engineering, crappy photographers blaming their gear, or Brand Loyalist Nazis bashing themselves under the anonymnity of the internet... it couldn't possibly apply in this forum.

MY bad!
This is a post which is about as interesting as they can get.

I'm lucky enough to get a picture that is better than the one posted. My galleries are simply a recording of my footsteps ... some of the scenes are not the most colorful but hey, not everyplace is drop-dead gorgeous. If a scene is NOT drop-dead gorgeous then it doesn't necessarily mean the camera should be left in the bag.

The link below is a place in Arizona that I couldn't stomach (and would never visit again) but I've been there and use the gallery both as a recording of where I've been and a vehicle to warn others of what (and what not) to expect.

Here is another loser (below) from a photogenic standpoint but my wife and I had a LOT of fun that day and the gallery records that memory.

IMO what you are suggesting (i.e. culling pictures) makes a great deal of sense if you are in the business of selling pictures. Probably, and this is just a guess on my part, no more than 20 pictures of any single genre (e.g. the typical wedding, portraiture, landscapes, wildlife, etc.) makes sense if you are selling prints or trying to get future business by advertising (e.g. again, the typical wedding).

SEARCHING FOR A BETTER SELF PORTRAIT

You have Polaris of course and next to it to the right is the star Er Rai in Cepheus and below it you have the constellation Cassiopeia with Caph, Schedar, Ruchbah and Segin. Below that near the horizon is the constellation Perseus and the star Mirfak by the way the hazy glow between Perseus and Cassiopeia is the Double Cluster. On the left side the brightest two stars are the pointers of the big dipper which are Merak and Dubhe and above them is Giauser in Draco.

The rest are mainly dim unnamed stars other than astronomical designations.

I think Joe was intimating this . . .

What is the purpose of your website? If it is at all designed to draw viewers (for sales, or not), then culling is a great idea. I am trying to do that now, and while it's painful to let some of my babies go (smile), it makes the web pages much more accessible.

Good post (no sarcasm). Obvious advice, but sometimes it's the most obvious stuff that we forget. (Or, we put off . . . and off . . . and off . . . which has the same effect as forgetting.)

No I haven't culled, but I really should.

I have a ton of pictures that are more or less tests of what a piece of equipment will do.

About the Forester, my wife has an 04 that I hate and she loves.
If might be our height difference, she's 5-6, I'm 6-3, I don't know.
After having it a while, it's like the shocks and springs just sort of gave up.
After 5 years, and 60K miles, in rides like a go cart.

I hope the newer Subaru's ride better than ours.

BTW, nice star trail.
I have to try that some night.

I love your image. Over here in Edinburgh, stars are few and far between!

If I was to cull my website of lesser shots - I would hardly have any images in it!

No matter how I try, I cannot seem to let images go - I should be more disciplined and more selective but each one is a memory of when and where I captured it and about 85% of the ones on my web were taken in the company of my girlfriend, who hates photography and loves golf (I hate golf).

Developing my website is part of the 'photographic hobby' as are the forums, the review readings and the constant search for new ideas and new locations - living in a country that has been rained on for the last 3 years is not fun! My latest idea is a blast - I have returned part of my photography to film and bought a Nikon FM3a SLR + lenses. I am not giving up on my Canon DSLR gear yet!

Its bad enough to keep all the images and even worse to figure out how to actually display the better ones at home? I have given up on photographic albums, digital photoframes and my orginal idea of purchasing a top end printer has also been shelved. How many images would I actually print for the money and my house has very small walls.

My latest idea is to purchase one of those top end televisions (50" flat on the wall job) stick in a USB stick with my 'best of the worse images' and let it run whilst listening to classic music or jazz - saving up for it now!

Cheers!

Thanks Dave!

I have a similar Love Hate relationship with the car too as I am 6'7". I have the seat all the way back and then also reclined so my head is about even with the A pillar (not sure if that's the real name). I know it's dangerous but with gas where it is I really needed a solution when I got it.

I totally agree about the shocks, that's a weak link but other than that I think it's a fine car. I'm about due for a suspension upgrade but then again I've probably driven mine as much on dirt and gravel as I have on pavement.

I upload some amazing presentations, but they always lose that quality in short order, as if spoiling after an expiration date. Maybe the hosting server's room AC is failing? I'm not sure, but for this I have to go out frequently and hunt for fresh captures.

If I looked back to cull - each gallery would be empty! Maybe there's some preservative action or plug-in I can incorporate into the workflow?

I'm going to have to do something - the galleries are starting to reek, and something's growing in the corners (and more than once, I thought I saw some of it move).
