Adobe Gamma and Windows XP?

I'm running Adobe Photoshop 6.0 on a Dell PC & monitor with Windows XP. When I use Adobe Gamma to calibrate my monitor, it disables color on the monitor. I'm left with a balck and white monitor. I can't use the desktop properties settings to recover color. I have to do a system restore.

Gamma disables color just by starting the program and then cancelling out without actually doing anything. Does anyine know what might be causing this problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Update the video drivers for your graphics card/chipset.

Update the monitor drivers from the manuf., if you can get them.

Then try re-installing Photoshop.

Then get a Mac ( ;) I have a PC).!

I updated the video drivers and reinstalled Photoshop - didn't help. The Mac option is looking better all the time...

Can you borrow a monitor to try? Sounds like a stretch, but you never know.

Bill, Photoshop six was never designed for XP, and unfortunately, one of the things that doesn't work very well if at all, is Adobe Gamma.

When Adobe say in their advertising that 7 is 'Fully XP compatible' this is what they have fixed.

Thanks for the input. I was planning to upgrade to Photoshop 7 soon anyway. Maybe this will take care of my problem. However, I'm running an STB Velocity 128 display card with 4mb memory. Someone on another forum told me that this card so old that it may not work anyway.

Oh well ...

That card, or more precisely, 4mb of video memory is an antique. 16mb would be the mininum, and 32 or 64 would be optimum. I bet you had to work at 640X480 to even see 24 bit color, if that.

That's your "weakest link"! I didn't think any 4mb cards were still in use. ;)

Get a GeForce 32-64mb card before you upgrade to PS 7. Your best bet for a solution.

Hi again

If your video card is already working under XP then there's certainly no harm in trying it with 7 before you decide to bin it.
7, does seem to take more memory of course.

I hope it solves the problem for you. Gamma loader works for me with 7/XP/GEforce3.
Good luck
Ian

I got an answer to my loss of color problem during calibration from someone on another forum. Just in case someone else runs across this problem here is what worked for me:

1. Under Desktop, Properties, Settings, Advanced set the graphics acceleration to 0.
2. Set the monitor resolution to 640x480 and 16 bit color
3. Calibrate with Adobe Gamma
4. Reset graphics acceleration and resoultion to desired levels.

After doing this, I went ahead and put down $80 for a new Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 with 64MB memory. It is noticeably faster than my old card.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Best Regards,
Bill
