Hello to all;

I've narrowed the choice for a photo quality printer to the Canon S900 or Epson 785. I've taken a flash card into the store and they let me print off an 8 X10 on the 785 and it looked very nice, but so far I haven't found the S900 hooked up so I can print the same picture to compare it my self. So I'm asking my fellow enthusiest for their feelings if the S900 is worth the extra money. My gut feeling is that the 785 will probably do fine, but I'd hate to miss out on better quality for just the $150.00 difference. I'd also hate to spend the extra money and buy a problem, but reading here I really don't think that would be the case. I'm limited to around $350.00 for a printer, so the higher end units are out of the "picture".

Thank you to all that respond this my inquiry!

I have a Canon S900 and find it very impressive so far, though I admit it's the first printer I ever used as a photo printer. You can find some excellent feedback about it at Amazon, eopinions and Cnet, if you need details. It made me decide. :)

Hi Fred,

I have had several Epsons and thought that was the way to go. But about a year ago I bought a Canon S800. The print quality is phenomenal!! I don't miss the Epson.

You can find the s900 for under $350

That's the price before you call and start haggling! I got my s9000 from them and it was $425.

Great printer, you'll be happy with it. I use Office Depot Premium High Gloss Photo paper with it instead of the CPPP and it works great.

I just bought a Canon S900 and it arrived today. I haven't had a chance to use it much but am very impressed with the first few pictures I printed. The instructions are clear and simple, the software is generous, it's quiet and fast. It also is a nice looking printer, but maybe a little wider than some others. 6 separate ink cartridges.

There's a good review on it at Steve's Digicam site, along with some comparision comments about the Epson. See this page:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/canon_s900.html

I bought mine for $313 (no shipping) at Buy.com. I am very impressed with that site. Service is excellent and the order arrives in just a couple days after it was shipped. I have made previous purchase from that site too. Buy.com has the Canon Photo Paper Pro (4x6 borderless prints) for $7.49 for 20 sheets. Buy 3 or more and get a free one.

Good luck on your decision.

Fred 2 Fred,
Hey Fred,

No doubt about it go with the S900, You will forget the price long before the quality.

I have run 500 prints 4x6,5x7,8x10,and love it,I find it prints best with canon,"photo paper pro, and epson premium photo paper".

I use an S900 and don't feel you can really go wrong with this. However, it doesn't work all that well with Matte paper and photos; it tends to have very long drying times when this type of paper is user.

Hello again.

I just wanted to thank all of you that responded to my inquiry, even though it has been asked and addressed here many times. I just shows the calibre of the people that are on this website. It's very refreshing to be able to ask a question that has been asked before and get nice complete answers and not be "slammed dunked" for asking it again. Getting a response to your your own mesasage just seems a little more personal. Like the other people are talking to you personally and your not just reading other peoples "mail". So I've decided on the Canon S900 and will order it tonight when I get home. I still did like the 785 too. It was a tough decision.

Given you've made your decsion, just so you won't question it too much, which is normal: You would be happy with either. There is not a big difference in terms of quality, if in fact there is any. If you had these on the frig people would be quite impressed by either. As a nod for the Canon, it's faster, a lot faster.

But the big difference for you is that as the owner of the Pro IS you'll be much happier with the color matching from the Canon. The Epson is OK but Canon -> Canon is better. Discernably better. Earlier Canons produced truly nasty output on the Epsons, but recent versions do OK (maybe Canon has finally figured out RGB space?) But the blues are just nicer with the Canon printers (IMO) and you avoid the red cast which you can get with the Epsons. Anyway, if you had an Olympus you'd be happier with the Epson, but you don't, so you wouldn't be.

Good decision. Just be sure to get extra cartridges when you order your printer. Cheers!

You might consider a compromise and purchase the Canon S820. Compromise in price that is. I just purchased one from Amazon for about $225.00. In comparing to S900 it is basically the same except for print time

The S820 has 1536 nozzles as compared to the S900 with 3072 nozzles, so it takes twice as long to print. But output is excellent.

I hope by suggesting the S820 I haven't complicated your decision

Here is Canon link comparing both side by side.

-- I've used canons and espons, each has its goods points.

I'm currently using the S900, have switched from 780 and 870.

Canon - 6 cartridges @$12 ea, Epson $18 color, $24 black

Canon prints a full 8-1/2 x 11 in about 2 minutes
Epson does it in about 8 minutes.
Canon $350; Epson (780) $100
Canon supplies - hard to find (don't stock)
Epson not as hard to find, (out of stock)

I think the S900 has the edge for quality, but not by much (the Canon Pro paper looks more like a processed photo)
Epson 780 sound like its about to fly apart (870 was quiet)
S900 is in between

Both waste a lot of ink clearing the jets (should take a lesson form HP, if only HP could get its image quality up)

For just image quality you can't go wrong with either, if you get a good one. I had to take my first 2 S900 back to Circuit City because they malfunctioned within less than a week. The third one from Best Buy is still working correctly after about 2 months (no reflection on the stores intended).

Hope this helps.

Where do you live that Canon cartridges are hard to find? The local Office Depot out here in So. Cal has them all the time, and after checking with some people back east in NY the local OD there has them in stock as well. Also, if you buy them in quantity from OD, they drop in price to $9.99 ea.
just curious, not a flame.
