Hi there,

I bought a 10D when they first came out, flirted with the 20D but never could get used to the 1.6x factor so jumped on the 5D when it was released.

I now have the upgrade bug and wanted to ask for advice/opinions etc.

I am very tempted by the 5D MKII - first of all put off by the video (thats what I use a video camera for isn't it :-) but the more I think about shooting HD video through my lenses the more it appeals.

Well that and many other MKII features...

I am however toying with the idea of keeping my 5D and maybe buying that crop body that I so dislliked so much originally purely to give me more reach at things like airshows etc.

I have a good selection of Canon glass;

17-40 f/4L
24-105 f4L
70-200 f/4L
100-400 f/4.5-5.6L
50mm f1/4
100mm f/2.8 Macro

...and so the only lens I would really like would be the 300mm f/2.8L but that is (and has always been) outside my price range although I can but dream as I have hired one on a few occasions going back to my T90 days.

So...body it is then so I am looking for inspiration/advice/comments/ideas from anyone who may have been down this road before.

Latest & greatest 5D MKII or a crop body as a second camera.

And if the crop body then which one would be the 'closest' to my existing 5D as far as touch & feel, operation, interface, performance etc.

50D maybe?

Thanks & regards,

Get the Mark II. If you love your 5d you'll love the mark II even more.

I got it in February and it's been AMAZING.

or a second hand 1DII?

OK, no video, but this is closer to your 5D than one of those 1.6 crop bodies, has pro focussing, pro VF, blinding fast shooting, pro metering, ......

And the 8 mpix beats the 15 mpix of the 50D hands down. (this could get me some flames, I guess)

But you still need a video camera to make video...

i would never get rid of my 5D... i just love the IQ and WB!

and since you have amazing line-up of lenses take advantage of this... i might be to bias as a JP (and we just love to carry two bodies all the time!)... one for WIDE the other for LONG lens...

and since 5D and 5D II are slow cameras... a faster camera (2nd body) will really complement your arsenal!

and since... you look like you have the $$$ try to consider... a used or refurb MK III (this is also a crop body)... i think will be a perfect combo!

final thougths... stick with pro level bodies! you will not regret this...

Easy, get the 5D MK II, especially when you have the glass for it.

I have got a 5DII after upgrading from a 5D and I'm actually about to sell it and move back and do the same thing you are considering. I have no need for an SLR with Video and I find the images are too big for my PC to handle and I can't afford to upgrade that aswell. So I'm going back to 5D and I'm going to get a APSC either the 40D or 50D.

I also had a crop camera and bought a 2nd hand 5D. After that the cropper never saw any use any longer so I bought another second hand 5D. Now I'm very happy! I'm a portrait and landscape shooter so I don't need the longer reach of a crop camera.

Cheers
