I checked out these web sites and the prices for the camera I'm interested in (Minolta D7i) is the same as I could buy it for at Fry's ($999). So why would anyone buy from theses places unless you have no Fry's or other similar store near your neighborhood.

So anyway I found an online "store" called DigBuy.com. They have the same camera for $760. :) Nice but, can anyone else here confirm their reputation? Do you think they (or any online place with really low prices) may be re-selling "returned" products or something like that? I'm skeptical as to why the price is so low. I looked at the reseller.com link and they seem to rate high but I'm still skeptical.

Any info on this? I have no problem buying other things online but when it comes to a "big ticket" electronic device I start to ask more questions. :)

Respectfully, if you checked the price of the Minolta Dimage 7i on our site and ended up with $999, you missed an essential step. $999.95 is MAP -- Minimum Advertised Price. Next to it we have "Email me a better price." Click there, give us your email address and seconds later we send you a special URL with the REAL (lower) price from which you can add the item to your shopping cart with the REAL (lower) price.

I am glad to see that mr posner and also someone from state street direct take the time from their busy schedule to see what consumers say and think. They are both reputable dealers and that is why they reply. there are others just not on my mind now but Mr. Posner is correct check their ratings then decide. He who is forwarned is oft times never found forlorned.

thanks for all your comments ..

i will definatally have a look at the retailer ratings before i continue down this track .. and i will be waiting for my yearly bonus

Thanks Henry, actually I noticed that button with the lower price and clicked it... It said $929 was the real price.

But here's how I think (and don't know if this is typical thinking or not)... When I click on CNET for the prices, I know that the top highest prices ($999 in this case) represent what I could get it at Fry's for (barring a sale). So I instantly disregard those companies because I would buy at a retial store first because of shipping (it might get damaged), if something is wrong I can bring it back, and most of all I "know" what I'm getting to a higher degree then with an online store (I'm sure your company is very ethical however).

So I focus on the online stores that show a 15 to 25% decrease in price. In my mind anything lower is a scam, and anything higher it's not worth the trouble if something goes wrong.

So that's the way I think about it. However with non-electronic/expensive items, I will buy online instantly because it's convenient or whatever... Or if I don't want to have to go find it in a store, etc.

Here's another example.. I'm now looking at the Olympus E-20 (good is never good enough for me :), and I checked the price on CNET. Most of the companies I've heard of and trust (BestBuy, PC Connection, CDW, Amazon) all have the price shown as $1699. Gateway is $1999 for some reason. So I'm assuming that at Fry's (or wherever) would also have a price of $1699.

Then I see BuyDig.com who shows the price as $1318! That's a discount over Fry's and those "top" online stores of 22%! And since people say this company is reputable that makes it very hard to pass up.

But that's what confuses me.... If the merchandise is rerpacked or a return item then I could understand how they could sell it at that price. If it isn't that, then why don't the other online stores try to match the price to stay competetive? Does buydig have a secret source they buy from that allows this substantially lower price?

If you're going to spend that kind of bread, do yourself a favor and buy it at B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

I echo the reccomendation re B & H Photo -- i don't know whaere you checked But the internet price for the Minolta D7i was $869 not $999

I have always been satisfied by the B & H service -- If the local store can match that price then fine -- don't forget sales tax

I also would recommend B&H Photo-video especially if your friend lives on the East Coast. They are very professional. Their website is http://www.bhphotovideo.com

If your friend lives on the West Coast, Camera World of Oregon is reliable too. Their website is http://www.cameraworld.com

You can also check Roberts in Downtown Indianapolis, their website is http://www.robertsimaging.com

Hope that info helps, good luck!

My 3 favorites are J&R, B&H, and Adorama, maybe it's a love affair i have with the ampersand :)....

seriously though, I've purchased more than I care to admit from all 3 and have NEVER had a problem. When you make your decision on what camera you want, I would highly recommend that you make the order over the phone to ensure that you're getting the best price.

I agree with Richard and Cameraworld was a favorite until Ritz bought them out -- great web site is gone -- etc etc.

I am not knocking B&H Photo or any of the other reputable stores others have mentioned, but I am surprised that when this type of question is asked more people don't mention State Street Direct (www.ssdonline.com) - a sponsor of this site. Click some of the banners at the top of the pages here. Many will take you straight to State Street.

They have competitive prices (particular if you sign up as a member of their free buyer's club) and often run promotions such as 5% - 10% off in-stock cameras, free express shipping, etc. I took advantage of one of their 10% off promotions earlier this summer to purchase a Canon S30 for $450 - very competitive. And they don't try to make up for low prices by charging outrageous shipping fees, pushing high-priced accessories, stripping normally included items from the packages, etc.

The sales people were low-pressure, customer service was courteous and prompt, and delivery was as promised. I would have no qualms about purchasing from them again, and would recommend them to others.
