Anybody have recommended S2 lens and flash for wedding photography?

Thanks

Hi nvn -

I'm using a Tamron 28-105 f 2.8 with SB80dx flash, on my S2, as my primary general use lens. I picked this lens in part with wedding work in mind, but I haven't shot one yet with it. Iin other use, I'm satisfied with the combination and have confidence that it will perform well. I wanted the low f-stop and am willing to carry around a bit more weight & bulk in the lens.

Here's a shot with that lens from last weekend, which took advantage of some of the same high-contrast low-light background that I expect to encounter in wedding work:

I too use the Tamron 28-105 2.8 for about 90% of my wedding work...see

http://www.pbase.com/deluco for the Kudirka wedding photos. All done with the S1. The outdoor portraits use an off-camera Lumedyne in a Halo...but all the candids in the reception hall are done with the Nikon SB22s flash...an excellent value at about $140.00. It also bounces vertically, so if you have it on a bracket you can bounce off the ceiling, if you choose. It really has plenty of power for weddings. You don't really need to spend $400 or $500 for a flash to get the work done. It does not have multi-power manual settings, however..just full power in manual. But it does have three auto settings and ttl....which in my opinion is really all you need for weddings.

By the way, I too used Vivitar 285's and also like them for the money, but the recycle time can sometimes be a killer. I can actually run the SB22s for TWO weddings on one set of AA alkaline's and on standard shots, at f6.7, the recycle time is NIL.... not that I'm trying to save $2.50, but the capacitor is incredibly efficient with power.

The wider angle reception shots were done with the Nikon 18-35mm.

Hi Jim,

I'm very impressed with the wedding images on you posted on the pbase site. Do you remember what the available light reading was inside the church? Thanks,

Normally we don't correct language on these forums because of the global nature of the internet and the wide number of languages represented by members. However I hope I'll be forgiven if, just this once and in the spirit of constructive criticism, I point out a spelling mistake that comes up time and again and involves one of the most used words in the photographic area. "lens". lens is not spelled with an"e" at the end.

Sorry and forgive.

...the Merriam-Webster Dictionary lists "lense" as a variant. I too normally don't correct spelling but you sent me off on a mission :') I guess that if enough people misspell it, it becomes part of the language.

Thank you for the kind words. Actually, I don't exactly recall the settings. Sinful as it may be to many professionals, I use the dreaded Program mode for most of my photojournalism shots...paying carefull attention to the shutter speed and using Auto Exposure Lock for backlit situations. At the long zoom setting, the camera is going to minimize the aperture to 2.8 and maximize the shutter speed when in Program mode. As I recall it was very well lit and I was able to shoot at 800 ISO hand held and stay at 1/60th or above. For the PJ shots I don't much care about the aperture setting. As long as the main element is sharp on at least one shot I'm happy. For the ring exchange I don't re-enact..it's live. I shoot about three frames of each real fast. That pretty much insures one sharp one.

I am amazed and stand corrected at least as far as Merriam-Webster is concerned. I suppose other authorities may indicate differently but I wouldn't bet on it anymore:-)

I realize you may not have been talking about the pj shots but maybe also the procession shots...

I believe the reading at ISO320 was something like 1/30th at f4 or 5.6...in that range. My camera settings for the procession are Manual, f6.7, 1/60th with the flash set to Auto at f6.7. I have a Lumedyne strobe camera right, near the back of the church facing the aisle so that it hits the left back/side of the subject as they hit 12' from the camera. That will generally give me about 5.6 from the distance it is from the subject (at 50 watt seconds). The 2nd light provides a kicker to define the subjects as they walk down the aisle. It's not necessary but it adds a bit of a "natural" look to the photos. Don't ask me why I do it...most of the procession shots don't end up in the album anyway. Bride usually selects only her and dad coming down the aisle....to save space for other things (I charge the album by the number of photos). They already have portraits of the ladies that I did at the house.

Hi there,

I use a Metz 45CL4 with the Nikon SCA adapters for wedding work. Works fine. It would be nice to have a higher sync for fill on sunny days I must admit.

Here is an entire wedding I put online all shot with the S2. These are just web sized images tho. Church was extremely dark unfortunately.

I have had 4 happy brides so far shooting with the S2 exclusively.

What do you do when they ask for no flash during the ceremony?

This has actually never happened. Either anything goes, or they forbid photography all together during the ceremony.

I have a natural light set of ceremony photos as well. The church was nice and bright though. The 800ISO setting works well for natural light in the church.

SunSet Camera has it for 649.95 (800) 564-0700

Do you think this len is better then the 28-105 f/3.5 Nikkor ?
I appreciate for all of your advices. I finally decide on the Tamron
Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto SP AF 28-105mm f/2.8 LD Aspherical IF
Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D. I find it on B&H for $800, is this
the lens you guys mention? please let me know any other place sell
it for less.
