People who need help never get it in this forum!!!

You are right on target. I am a new to this forum but not new to photography. I am sick and D*mn tire of paging through the most stupid and redundant post. Same ole Sh*t different day.

The major topics that get the most attention tend to be "underexposure", "550EX", "Slow AF", "What Lens to get" blah blah blah.

Recently I just got ticked off and flame a poster. (sorry) And then I got flamed back. (no problem, I get thick skin).

The Janksta

or as fastlane calls me "The Jerkster"
starting to tick me off too, you see 200 replies to some stupid
post about people arguing. yet you post a simple question and no
one can answer it. i've posted 2 questions worded differently, i've
also replied to another asking a similar question saying my
situation neither of us have got answered.

yet people bragging about something they have or L glass, or d60
underexposure, or slow AF blahblahblah. i don't even click on
those anymore but its a waste of my time having to sort through
them.

Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5

I had one briefly but it would not sync correctly as a slave to my 550EX or the ST-E2. Instead it would overexpose by about 3 F stops effectively washing out the image. However, when mounted directly on the camera and used by itself it worked ok. Since I wanted a flexible wireless system and the Sigma would not work correctly with my existing Canon flash in a wireless situation, I sent it back. I've since acquired 2 additional 550s and now have 3 550s and the ST-E2 and the complete wireless system works perfectly.
Yesterday I posted a question about getting the Sigma EF 500 super
flash, and the only response I got was from a nice person who also
wanted to know if the flash was good or not!
It seems that the only people who get any kind of response are
people who ask the same stupid questions!
What lens should I get??
is the d60 a good camera??
hey look at the semi naked girls????

I am only a beginner and need a lot of help with some purchases!!!
WOW! some one with a legit question!
But Nooooo we keep geting responses like
I like my 15-30 lens!
I hate my 15-30 lens!
I wish I had a 15-30 lens!
and so on and so on!
a post like this could go on for days!!!!!!!!!!

If this forum is to help people who need help, you could have
fooled me!!
It seems to me like most people on this forum are not interested in
helping, but more interested in wasting time, asking the same
questions, getting the same answers!

I will admit that some of you are willing to help people, and are
truly a big part of why I am sticking around! and I would like to
thank you for that!
But a lot of you don't seem to care about helping people who need
it! it's almost like the pros or semi pros only answer back to pros
or semi pros! That's to bad because this is such a great
hobby/profesion that it would benifit all people if we could get
some simple advise on a simple question!

Now if someone would be so kind as to answer a simple question!
I am thinking about getting the Sigma EF500 supper flash, I will be
using it to take photos of birds and wildlife in the field. Will
it be able to sync up even in high iso and shutter speeds???
that's all I want to know.
and if you don't know the answer, please let me know.

Thank You
Paul..

You know, there is another possibility... nobody knows because nobody else has purchased one. I have a Canon EX flash along with probably most people here who do flash photography.

Now, here's a thought... buy one from a store with an exchange policy and report your findings here. Going off like you've done is one way to have people respond, but I'll bet you won't like most of what you receive.

...is work with what we have in terms of the limited information in your post.

Your topic line is: "Flash question"

Perhaps "Sigma EF-500 flash comments?" would have attracted a bit more attention.

Answer:

I do NOT recommend the use of third-party flash units even though some are very, very good UNLESS you are really skilled with flash and are willing to take the risks.

What risks are those? Well, if something should go haywire with your third-party flash and something fries in your Canon camera, Canon will not support this as a warranty issue.

This risk is not terribly great, but it's out there and only you can decide if you want to entertain it.

Further, flash units are "mated" with today's AF cameras. (Nikon generally has better flash systems than Canon, unfortunately.) Generally speaking, you should get better and more predictable performance from the Canon EX flash units. The EX series is the only Canon flash line "mated" to the D60/D30 plus it's also "mated" with all of the Canon flash accessories.

So...the real question must be answered by you: Is saving $150 today worth (1) potential camera down time and repair bills in the slight case that the third party unit damages your camera; (2) having a fairly generic flash unit not specifically "mated" to your camera; and (3) having a flash unit that is also not "mated" to the accessories for the EX series strobes.

This is NOT a bum rap on third party flash units. The Vivitar 283, for example, is a venerable workhorse and there are others by, say, Metz, that perform heavy duty chores. If you are truly highly proficient with flash (which, no offense intended, you probably aren't or else you probably would not have asked the question), then you'd know how to get the most out of the good third party gear out there and minimize the risks.

What would I do? Get the Canon EX today and forego worrying about future problems or future regrets that "maybe I should have bought the 550EX."

Good luck.

Hi Bryan,

You are correct in your statement, I was hoping to get a difinitive answer from someone, and a few people let me know that they did not have the sigma flash only the canon flash. Byron actualy gave me some good leads! I have decided to purchase this flash form Delta int. After using it for a while, I will share my experiences.

Thanks for the input.

Well my topic was stated in a way that I hoped to get more people to look at it. It seems that some people will see SIGMA and turn away!

I was hoping to get the input from all flash users to make my dissision.

I never realy thought about the risk factor! I currently have a POS Sakar flash and it works on my D60 but without high speed sync.

And yes I know little about flash photography, but the only way to learn is to jump into it.

Thanks for the advice.

I forgot to mention.

1. I do a lot of bird and wildlife photography. Most of the wildlife photographers who are into using flash extensively have very elaborate setups. I do not recall seeing any of them using third-party flash equipment.

2. You may wish to contact Sigma directly for technical information and specification. The level of cooperation and information you receive from them may well assist you in your purchase decision.

Sorry, but you're asking those who already answered the same question before, even perhaps more than once, to do so yet again to save you some work searching for the answer yourself.

THAT's why you didn't get an answer. THAT's why LOTS of people don't get answers.

Recently I participated in several threads about the Sigma 28-70 & 24-70. Each time posting the same answers and links to the tests I did, which are still on-line at Pbase. But I doubt I'll do it again. I'll just ignore the posts because I already did my part, several times over.

Jack,

I think all of our times are valueable!! I never stated that mine was more important than someone elses! I stated that other people find time to respond to questions, and it seems that when I post a question "few and far between" I never get an answer! There are a hand full of people who are trully helpfull, and I am very greatfull for that. I am sure there are many people out there who are in the same boat as me! work 6am to 7pm, play with the kids after work, get up at 6am on a Saturday or Sunday to get a couple of hours of photography in before you get the phone call that the kids miss you! when are you comming home! You obviosly miss interpreted my post. What agravates me is a post like " is the canon 20mm lens any good? " and there is about 50 replys to that
