SX10 Catbird

It's hard to tell but I think there is bird movement. The bird does not look as sharp as the stonework.

I could of set it faster I guess....hard to set it by the camera screen it always looks darker than what it really is....Here are the settings...

Shutter Speed 1/318 sec.

Lens Aperture F/5.7

Focal length 100mm

ISO 80

Details and fine lines on bird feathers are a killer for those small sensor high pixel count cameras.

For my part, I find it difficult to get good birds pictures out of my SX10... even if I had decent results in the past with the S3 IS and S5 IS.

I guess that the best way to get decent results, is to have the subject cover as much of the frame as possible.

Yves, what is the max zoom value to use but to skip out noise in the pictures? What is the balance? I think that 560mm equivalent probably are too much, but I would like to know your opinion. Thanks

I am finding that out with the SX10... This shoot here I took with my Sony H5 with the DH-1758 added with no PP what so ever...Its a smaller MPs camera so I was thinking of trying the SX10 at 6MPs?..Don't know if that will help any...

What a beautiful picture!

My first camera was a sony H2 and it made very sharp and noisless photo! Then, are you telling me that maybe I had to buy a teleconverter for the H2 and don't spend money for the sx10? I've to work a lot with the canon... :)
Thank you

I see that you are struggling to get some acceptable images out of the SX10. It reminds me of when I picked one up several months ago, only to return it because it produced consistently soft images that lacked punch and clarity. I honestly think my S5 IS was much better (I'd like to have an S5 IS with Digic 4).

I'm looking for a good super-zoom P&S to compliment my D90, but I think I have to wait a bit longer to see what the upcoming announcements hold.

The H2 and H5 work Great with the DH1758 lens..I have the H2 and the H5..The H2 has a slight edge over the H5 I think...Now if they could take video as nice as the SX10...Owill you can't have every thing...lol...But I DO think the SX10 takes great landscape shots...

Russell.. I got 60 or so days left to take mine back I am still trying to deside...The SX10 has more zoom but all the IQ goes out the window...Its more like its just over cropping the picture?..

It's not really bad IQ, but I just felt that Canon comprimised a bit too much on this design. They're pushing the optics on this incredibly long zoon lens and I think it shows in the photos. When compared to what other cameras are doing (like the Sonys), it seems to have fallen behind a bit in IQ. Everything else about the camera is outstanding and top-shelf.

I'm tempted to give it another try, just in case I missed something or had a bad copy.

We all have our own expectations, so you'll need to decide if the SX10 works for you. There are some other possible alternatives - Panny FZ28 and ZS3. Both look good and have lots of fans.

Any bird, or animal picture, will look much sharper when the focus point is the creatures eye. So, single point focus on the eye with low iso, with aperature around f/4 and shutter speed of at least 1/125. Usually that will give a nice result. Lastly, practice, practice, practice.
