--I am interested in doing some time lapse photography, creating mpeg/QT? movies of flowers blooming, bannanas rotting etc. Can anyone suggest a cameras that can do this, the high end Cannons SLR have time laspe capability(do they have time lapse movie cabability, or do I use some software to piece together images to a movie), but the lower end ones dont seem to have this. Maybe I would be better off buying a digitial camcorder to do this, but would rather do it with a digitial camera.

The Olympus E-10 & E-20 have this capability

Alternatively...There are some software packages that can communicate through the USB/Serial port of your camera that will let you take images on a time lapse...

Cam2Com is one example but I think there are a few others...Look at their website to see the supported cameras

My first digital was a Ricoh RDC-5300. It has the time lapse feature and I have had some fun using it. I recently figured out how to make an animated gif with one of my programs so I will probably get the Ricoh out and dust it off again. I want to try it on a water lily opening in the morning.

Since the 5300 was my first digital, I sort of assumed time lapse was a normal feature and so I was suprised to find out that the uzi/ezi's didn't have it.

Hey, Jeff!

I saw that time lapse photo of yours when you first posted it. I LOVE it. I also want one of those fish barrels! Did you make that yourself? I have the barrel already, but about the fish, I live in central NJ, and so I am not sure they would LIVE. In any event, that is ONE COOL time lapse, dude! I love the fish swimming OVER the lily.

Regards, ;)

You didn't mention what camera you wanted to do it with but here's a freeware program that will do it through the serial port.

Hi Willa

If you have the whiskey barrel then you can get the plastic liner at home depot or one of those type stores. The fish will survive as long as the pond does not freeze. I use a surface heater on mine it does not heat the pond but keeps ice from forming.

Thanks for the comments on the time laspe.

I haven't had the opportunity to take a new set of lily photos yet, but I wanted to see how it might work out. I cut up a nine shot composite from last year and remade it as an animated gif:

Actually, the real, real, low end cameras do this. I'm talking about those little ball cameras you can buy for Macs and PCs. You can set those to shoot once a minute, once every 10 minutes, once an hour, etc. Of course they have to be connected to a computer.

Using Olympus E100rs

Here is a link to a 3 month drug store construction project condensed to 14 images. I found a slideshow script that fades 'tween images. For the completely manual timelapse (like this) it hides all the imperfections. To build this lapse I had to manually skew, stretch, etc. each pic to the others. Flash can also use the fade transition. enjoy.
