Defeating TTL metering pre-flash

I need a way to defeat the TTL metering pre-flash.

Why?

I purchased to Sony F707 primarily so I could take candids of my daughter. Unfortunately she closes her eyes in 9 out of 10 of the indoor photos. The TTL metering pre-flash is a real problem and I have found absolutely no way to disable it. My solution to date is to paste open eyes back into the good photos. :(

Yes, it really is the pre-flash and subsequent delay that is doing this. If you are not convinced, turn off red-eye reduction in setup, hold the camera at arms length, point it at yourself and blink immediately after you see the first flash. When I do this, I can consistently close my eyes before the second strobe. When red-eye reduction is on there are several more flashes in advance of the pre-flash. Try it.

Conflicting Information

I've read that the HVL-F1000 does not pre-flash and I was considering that as a solution, but there is at least one post that claims the F1000 will also pre-flash in every mode. Is it possible that Sony has also "improved" the F1000? Sure would be nice if they would allow you the option of disabling these "features".

If there is no way to do this with this camera, any suggestions on a different one and how to offload this one would be appreciated.

THe HVL-F1000 does not pre-Flash. I use it to trigger my Studio Flash units as the F707's internal's pre flash sets off the studio units and then fires the real shot while the Studio units are recharging!

So, you can rest assured that the F1000 only fires off a single flash when it takes the photo.

Have Fun!

K Novo,

I was the one that posted the info about the F1000 pre-flashing in all modes. I just tried it again to make sure and I can't get a pre-flash in any mode now....lol Not even Auto. It was pre-flashing, in all modes yesterday, maybe I broke it. Or maybe I fixed it...lol I really like this flash, despite this inconsistancy.

Sorry if I confused you even more,
Steve

Well, you certainly had me worried. I think you are the only one I know of that reported it pre-flashed. Everyone else seemed to be using the F1000 to fire slaves and they reported the flash was pointed away from the subjects. I was getting concerned that it might pre-flash when pointed at a subject, but wouldn't when pointed away - or some other permutation. The Sony site gives very little info. I had hoped to find a manual there. They say it is compatible with TTL so I was concerned. On the other hand, I've have other flashes units that have their own meters and perform a pseudo-TTL function - none that will mate with the F707 though.

Is it possible that it does red-eye reduction and you thought that was pre-flash? On the internal flash, red-eye reduction fires a series (3 or so) of bursts at lower intensity shots, followed by a pre-flash (appears to be normal intensity), followed by the real flash.

you wont regret it.
candids with children will come out great when you bounce it off the ceiling.

not to mention you wont get red eye with bounced flash.. and no it does NOT preflash (the f1000) i use it on my cat all the time, he closes his eyes normally with the built in flash...
