Pool/Model, Which Crop is best, C&C Welcome (imgs)

Where is this going to end up and who will see it? End of Summer....infinity pool...."long after this endless summer is gone...."....contemplation...reflection.....surface and depth....a sense of stillness and flow...

Nice setting, I'll go with #1 nix the bar, but you know the story that you want to tell.

....to get rid of the pool rail yet keep the trees which, IMHO, add a nice balance to the shot. That might work.

Olympus E-3, E-620 and E-420

Zuiko 7-14mm, 25mm pancake, 50mm, 14-42mm, 12-60mm, 50-200mm, and 8mm fisheye. FL-36R and FL-50R Flashes. HLD-4 Grip.
Canon PowerShot TX1
Ricoh GR-D
Sony DSC-V3

I prefer the second one, but maybe I'd still try a third cropping, leaving the left tree on the picture (and of course removing the bar in the lower left part).

Usually I try to apply the rule of thirds but there I like the concept of separating the image in two : one half of pool and one half of sky, nice cocktail :)

Love f2 Oly lens wide open ... 14-35mm f2, & a 50mm f2+1.4TC is my fav. combo on two 'IS' oly bodys.

rssarma,

Yes, very helpful.

More feedback is "Always" helpful. "Always".

The tree's ... lol ... that was a real problem ... because to get the whole tree would mean more PP work or including a $100 a day cabana in the shot (that is in the pool on both sides) ...

They have a night shot with the cabana ... I wanted this Day shot different.
Plus, I did not think the cabana added anything.

Trying to balance keeping it real , and enhancement.

HG
I pondered for a while and even tried some of my own crops, but came to the conclusion that the second crop seems to work the best . The first crop would have been nice had it not been for,
  1. The pool bar in the bottom
  2. The incomplete trees on either side. Maybe one complete tree may have helped.
Hope that helps.

Rand47,

Thank you for the encoragement. and comment.
HG
I like both, very much.

On the wider shot, I'd merely clone out the metal bar in the foreground.

The feel of each is very distinct. I don't think that either is "better" -- both are quite wonderful.

'gday HG

Depends on the client in the end, BUT for me #1 says tropics (pity there wasn't a palm either side, but it still says tropical), I have no problem with the half trees someone mentions nor the hat on the horizon. I feel her pose is a little strained—pity (that's just her inexperience most likely). Simply clone out the hand rail & they should be more than happy.
Aloha AD,
LOL, Ohhh so you got that?
It's her first real shoot ... and she is just going to High School!
She is crazy young.
5'10 and growing still.

Thank you for commenting ... have got some very helpful ideas.
As for #2 could be any where it tells me nothing about the location....it's just the back of a girl & an infinity pool it, tells me nothing else. Just file it & if they ask for anything closer then show them, if not you may be able to use it some place else down the track.
Yep, got the word ... the close crops are out. :)

Needs to be not "just" about Hawaii/Tropical ... it's also about the Hotel. well, duh lol

I think the second shot is best. I would actually move the girl to the left a bit more. And go in even tighter if you can.
That I can do ... did actually shoot some close crop stuff too.

But, it's for a Hotel AD ... Those shots would only be for the model. (and me lol).
I would love to try to shoot in this situation. I would look get the camera closer to the model. Put it on a tripod in the pool, and use a remote trigger so you can wait for the water to become glass-like.
Well, the glass-like part ... needs the pumps of the pool OFF :)
any ripple, sends shock waves thru the whole pool.

And, you really cannot shut down the Pool at a high end hotel like that in the Middle of Summer at 90% occupancy ... for too long.

and then there is the wind.
I would also play around with getting some light onto the model - maybe with off-camera flash or a reflector.
Had the gear to do that ... but the sun was doing a pretty good job that morning. It even reflected light off the pool onto her.

Key here was to have somewhat of a natural look. I think the sun did that rather well.
Did you try any other poses?

When they fly you over for a shoot ... and you have a few hours there ... you will end up shooting some "Gig-age". :)

I actually thought ... a shot of her floating around in a inner tube would be "the shot" ... or maybe lying on the edge ... standing on the edge ... standing in the middle.
Some worked ok, and might use for something else.

The only spot I did not shoot her at was on the close edge of the Pool ... because I had thought it would make the pool look smaller.

Needed a mood ... and a comfortable pose. (the model was not really the subject)

But, a "idea" was mentioned earlier on this thread that I might try in Post with a clone in of the model, on a close 3rd to the left, filling the frame.
That is what I love about digital ... I can cover my mistakes :)

How much post processing was done? Aren't reflections usually lighter than the objects they're reflecting?
No!! If exposed correctly they are going to be darker!! And with the chunk of glass HG is using this is normal!!

efrench,
Yes, AD is right ... blame it on the Glass (14-35 f2) LOL
Hate, when it does that!

Here's another thing ... it was early in the morning, pumps shut off ... sun did not pass the mountains or Hotel building behind me.
Light was just starting to creeep up the beach to the pool edge.
note: inside edge of pool almost dark.

PP in Lightroom (but, it is very, very close to what you see "out of camera") ... cloning, to simplify in PS, of course.

Kenneth,
Thank you.

So, you felt the refections and water should have more weight in the image.
HG
Nice image.

I would move the horizon line higher to the upper 1/3.

Yes, I kinda like the equal weight of sky and pool along with the X to the far horizon.

Yes.

For this image, I feel the reflections weigh more.

I don't like the horizon line smack in the middle of the image, thus the suggestion to move it upwards...rule of thirds.
