Hi guys ,

Hoping you can help me with an issue I have .

I have bought a 64MB Smartmedia card to find that it is incompatable with the Olympus flashpath adaptor (will not read when installed in flashpath adaptor) . Has anyone had this problem and overcame it ? - anyone have any suggestions on how to solve it ? .

BTW , I've been to the Oly website but its drivers for flashpath only go up to 64mb .

Many thanks ....

Andy, there are two different FlashPath adapters....

The earlier kind only goes up to 32mb capacity...
The latter one can read up to 128mb capacity...

I believe the model designators indicate by a 1 or 2 which one it is... (2 being the one capable of reading up to 128mb)

As for card readers...Zio! seems to be a popular one
Andy .
I don't know if there is a higher capacity adaptor available or
not, but get a reader. They are much faster.

I have the FlashPath adapter and updated the driver to accept
64 m cards . I used the driver from their website . The usb card
reader is still the way to go , but the floppy adapter is usable on
most all computers , in fact any computer with a floppy drive. It's
great for older sytems without usb.

The Floppy adapters are OK up to about 8mb Smartmedia. After that the transfer time is intolerable for me. It can be used in older systems without USB but the Parallel port reader is as fast as the USB and works in any PC. If the older PC is an issue the Parallel port reader may be appropriate as well. Either way you'll need to install drviers in whatever PC you use. That's the only drawback to accessing Smartmedia photos on friends computers. The only readers that don't require drivers that I've used are the PCMCIA adapters. Slip them into the PCMCIA card slot on a Notebook and it's a removable harddrive and fastest transfer rate.

Another inexpensive solution for computers without USB, or operating
systems such as Win95 or NT4 which do not support USB, is to use
a parallel port reader. A while back I bought one and it works great.

Here is what I have:

reader from this surplus hardware web site: (about $22 with shipping cost)
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_comp_lexrdrpar.html
One caveat with this device is that you will also need to buy two
keyboard plug size changers (one of each type) unless your computer
use the old style large keyboard plug. The reader taps power off the
keyboard port.

software driver from this web site:
http://www.microtechint.com/downloads/
select "Parallel CameraMate - SmartMedia Model"

The reader is Lexar brand, and Lexar has not updated their
drivers, so as sold it works only with up to 16MB and in fact
there's a serious problem with the original driver. Do not install it.

However, the "Parallel CameraMate - SmartMedia Model" seems to
be the same hardware as the Lexar device, and I've found that the
Microtech driver works great with my 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB cards.
I'm using the device on NT4.
