The polarizing filter would greatly improve the sunny day's shots by making the sky darker and more saturated, also removes overall foggy glare; the picture becomes more clear, contrast and colorful.

These are not my 1st pics with my 450D and the kit 18-55mm lens but
they are the 1st i'm willing to share.
The sky is white and blown out in most of them which makes them a lot less interesting. Watch your histogram and try not to over-expose the sky. Shooting RAW and pulling back during conversion also helps to a degree.

Otherwise, try using a GND filter for such shots. A polarizer might also help. Keep shooting and sharing!

Thanks for the comments.

I'm failry new to all this so can anyone recommend some cheapish filters for my camera.

How can I avoid over exposing the sky in my shots?

Thanks

Decent shots...

A little cropping and pp will make them even better.

I think this is the most interesting one...

I made a few changes...if you don't like it I will remove immediately...

Sorry to sound dumb but how have you done that? I can the the sky part has been cropped and it looks like the contrast increased. Was this in ACR or photoshop?

Thanks

... as another poster noted: These are fine snapshots. Start reading photography composition rules; what makes a good photo. Google or BING "photo composition tutorial" as a start. There is much good free info and help out there.. Also, review othere posters photos in this and other forums. All of the Photo magazines websites have help also. Kodak.com and PopPhoto.com have many resources for you also.

I think you have made a good start.

I used photoshop elements 5...

I don't remember the exact numbers that I used but here was what I did...

1) cropped from top right to the edge of the track
2) cropped from top left to the top of the cloud layer
3) moved the middle slider (in levels) to the right
4) USM of apx. 25,50,0
5) USM of apx. 75,0.3,0

The main things that I was trying to accomplish were...

1) isolate the track (also the tree on the far right was distracting)
2) increase contrast
3) get the horizon out of the center of the photo
4) sharpen

As many have already pointed out, the sky is white and blown out in many shots. I try and look at the histogram regularly to prevent over/under exposing a whole set of shots.
Hope this helps,
