Guy-

I am not near TO, but I can say that I deal almost exclusively with Henry's and find them to be excellent. I have tried some of the "chain" stores you mention here in NS (although Henry's has become a "chain" I guess...), and didn't care much for them - about half your list up there. I have had no problems with Henry's, including having to return items with no issues at all, and have valued some good advice I have gotten from them. As well, here in the more rural areas, their shipping is incredible - I order something, and most often I get an e-mail back in less than an hour that they have the order, and almost always within a day the package is on its way. Now that's service!!! My cousin used to work in Toronto, and was the one who mentioned that he "always" went to Henrys for his photographic needs, and now that he's retired near me here, he still goes to Henry's, just at a distance like me. Henry's just opened two stores in the Halifax/Dartmouth area of Nova Scotia, and I am sure we'll be travelling there in the near future.
Hope that helps,
Bill

Nothing here that can beat what you have in NYC. As a matter of fact, I did most of my purchases from NYC shops via mail order.

Headshot, Henry's main store on Church street (119), Vistek and Downtown Camera is about as goods as it gets.

WOW you were able to do that without photoshop!!!!

perhaps so; but i'm planning on a trip to Toronto, and wanted to know where to go just in case i need something unexpectedly.

I would stay away from Millennium 3000, they sell a lot of refurb stuff and probably not an authorized dealer.

Henry's is a safe bet, but not necessary the best prices.

If you are looking for pro gear, try Headshots, Henry's bought them out a couple of years ago, but they run independently of Henry's. I would go there instead of Vistek.

If you are going to Toronto the two stores I would go to are Henry's and Vistek. Vistek has 3 or 4 floors of equipment and both stores are close to each other.

So, you want to know where to go if you need something, somthing being completely undefined.

Well, the answer is, the nearest store that has whatever you want.

Toronto's a big place -- it's silly to travel 30 miles to buy a UV filter.

Henry's is a big chain, with stores in Ancaster (Hamilton) Oakville, Mississauga, downtown Toronto, Scarboro, Pickering, Vaughn, Oshawa, Thornhill and probably some I forgot.

All of these have Lightspheres and flash meters, and low to mid level bodies (D700s, 5D Mk II, probably, and good polarizers in all normal sizes, and a reasonable array of film, and SB900 and 580EX flash guns.

For the big DSLR cameras, go to Henry's downtown. But that does not sound like what you want.

Vistek is the pro store in town -- three storeys in the Queen Street store downtown, and this is worth a visit just for the fun of it. Big printers, lots of pro studio flash, giant tripods, wider range of lenses. This is the palce to buy obscure cables or a studio flash modeling light bulb.

Vistek Mississauga is good for a visit if you're nearby -- Mavis Road south of Highway 401, north of Highway 403

Blacks is a low-end retail chain -- only good for the basics, or frames, except for a couple of stores it aims at more serious photographrs. But there's a Blacks around every corner.

Downtown Camera is a block from Henry's main store, has lots of stuff, including top of the line cameras. But if you are that close, why not walk to Henry's?

Henry's downtown is closed on Sundays, most other stores are open from noon until 5.

Vistek is also closed on Sundays. Really, your best bet for pro equipment is in the following order: Vistek (you will pay through the nose but chances are, it's in stock - Anthony, on the top floor); Henry's Downtown; Downtown Camera (will best anyone else's prices, John or Daniel).

Headshot, Henry's main store on Church street (119), Vistek and
Downtown Camera is about as goods as it gets.
Those are the stores I'd recommend, Henry's and Downtown Camera are near Queen & Church streets, and Vistek is a little further east, Queen & Sherbourne I believe.

Also, plan a visit to the Henry's Outlet Centre (between Henry's and Downtown Camera)...the Outlet Centre has open box, end of line, and used items, and you may find a bargain there.

If you need to rent something both Headshots and Vistek rent, but there's also Filmplus.ca which is more strictly lighting stuff.

And if you want to meet up with some Torontonians while here, check out the Toronto Photography Meetup Group:

Aden Camera has the best prices I've seen anywhere in Canada. Henry's and Vistek are rather expensive (generally quote MSRP).

However, Henry's does price match anything that's in stock elsewhere.

What I suggest is printing Aden Camera prices up and when buying from Henry's, ask for their best price. If Aden's is lower, ask them to price match. .

If buying from Henry's be sure to ask if it had already been tried out. Also, their used equipment is very much marked up. For example, they would sell a D70 for over three times what they would pay for one. So there's always room for negotiation on the used gear, too.

I totoally agree that Hendry's and Visteck are the places to go in TO. I'm in Winnipeg and Hendry's has just expanded into the city (almost a year ago) on their march on the west coast.

One thing I'm not liking is their pricing. For Nikon at least the MSRP seems to be their golden rule. I've dealt with Don's in Winnipeg for years and I always get special pricing, but I've seem Don's sticker price as well as lsited price on teh web of The Camera Store in Calgary (excellent place to buy from by the way - as is Don's in Winnipeg) $100 or even more below Hendry's price. I've known the Wpg Pro Rep for Henry's for 20 years (when he was Kodak, also a lab rep before Hendry's came to town) and he can not really do anything on the pricing, it comes from head office. I've gotten qoutes from both Henry's and Don's and Don's was $150 lower on exactly the same item (WT-4A). The price was mostly because I've been a long time client nad have bought $20,000 + from them in the last 5-6 years, but I've said to the Hendry's rep that I would be willing to consider doing some shopping their but the priceing is just out of whack on some things. I prefer to be loyal, and I do have loyalty to the Henry's pro rep (heck, I even photographed his daughter's wedding) but when it comes down to such a price difference when I know the customer service will be the same at both places it makes it hard to phone their number when I need something....especially since Don's has treated me to so well on pricing and service.

Is Hendry's in Ontario the same when it comes to pricing? I know they have a ton of stores there, and only 2 in Manitoba.

Just about. In fact, I find $100-$150 price difference (with Aden, at least) is common on lenses.

I was talking about Henry's.......... never mind what I typed you should be reading my mind...for me it's a clear as mud! LOL

I just figured what was going on - "Henry's" starts off so close to my last name that I just automatically threw in the "D" for good measure when I was typing I guess. I'm gonna blame this on the stupid summer cold that's clogging up my entire head making me feel numb from the shoulders up. I end up explaining to everyone I am in contact with that - no, I don't have the H1N1 virus, it's just a cold (I HOPE!). But after re-reading my post I typed "Hendry's" about a dozens times instead of "Henry's". So either this cold has made me totally lose my mind (people actually have questioned that years ago!) or I am in fact a complete and total idiot!

Though I MAY be a total idiot..........I DID mean "Henry's"! LOL

cough, cough, hack, sneeze, sniffly....did I mention being sick in the summer sucks?????
