S2 - USB problems?

Odd...

My Windows 2000 system recognized the S2 when I plugged it in via USB and powered it on, but didn't detect the test photos I'd just taken. Shots from an earlier test session were still on the 256MB CF card.

When I disconnected and reconnected, Fuji FinePix couldn't find the S2, though it seemed vaguely aware something was attached at "Drive G:" I had no trouble with the FireWire connection and my laptop, so this seems to be an S2/USB quirk.

For what it's worth, I've also had USB woes with some external audio equipment on this system, so the fault may be more in Microslop's camp than Fuji's. The "USB standard" is actually 2 standards, one endorsed by M$ and one by Intel, and they aren't totally compatible.

I'm going to try an Iogear USB 2.0 Compact Flash reader. Maybe a permanently connect USB device will be more stable.

Anybody have similar problems?

Take II:

My USB 1.0 ports are an older (circa 2000-2001) VIA chipset, which seems to be the problem. When I plugged the Fuji S2 into my newer USB 2.0 card, everything was copasetic. Data still transferred at USB 1.0 speeds, but everything worked as expected.

I've also decided that before FinePix, QImage, or any other application starts mucking with my images, I'm going to transfer them to my PC's hard disk. You can do this easily from Windows Explorer (MKS Toolkit in my case), eliminating one risk factor.

Have fun,

Having the same problem. Just playing with elements right now and cannot recognize the S2 on USB port. Having to save images first prior to moving to PS elements. Can't wait for notebooks to have DVD burners so I can just use this old clunk for surfing. Pioneer anounced the burners 2 wks ago, however, none of the computer makers are announcing... I guess until Sept-Dec. Oh the waiting Game.

Wish I could help but I use firewire on my notebook. Seems to work fine, very fast...

I'm getting an S2 shortly. Could this USB thing be a problem for me on my Dell desktop (Dimension XPS R450 PII running Win 98, not the SE version--purchased in 1998)? From what I am reading here it sounds almost like a certainty.

I would recommend upgrading the OS to Win98se or WinME. The original Win98 doesn't have drivers for USB or Firewire. WinME will recognize a Firewire card, Win98se has some problems with Firewire, but you can get drivers for USB-1 and 2.

I currently run WinME on my laptop with a Firewire buss card. This works with the S-2 Shooting software. I was not able to get a pci Firewire card to work on my Win98se box. The box has USB-1 and 2 cards that work well for transfer from my CameraMate card reader.

Fred... I would seriously consider upgrading to Win XP or Win 2000. These two have a different way of handling ram and it works. I have a Dell XPS500 and 640 megs of ram and it works but slow with Qimage and a bunch of S2 images. Also, no more crashing programs....

One sure way to solve your problem is to get a Macintosh.

You'd only create more problems. Qimage doesn't work on a Macintosh, for example.
