I just posted a note in the lens forum, but I thought I should comment on the performance of the D300 / 200-400 VR combo I used last week for a flight shooting workshop.

We had a falconer and about 6 birds ready to fly for bait on Tuesday am, and the weather was with us big time! The sun was bright, grass was very green and the ISO settings were Low!! IMO, this is a key to high quality bif shooting... great light at your back, and low iso, high shutter speeds.

I have seen several images from my guests, they all had a really good day.

Lots of edited images on my website below, and some new and interesting articles on my new blog... links below., and lots more coming!

Stunning images Raymond, wished we could get this type of workshop in Australia. Also great website and blog.

The D300 + 200-400 also kept up with these guys:

VERY large version: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2421/3648835296_3acaa318cd_o.jpg

Small silhouettes - check. Rapid distance change - check. Long lens & handheld - check. All the ingredients to make life difficult for the AF system but it got the job done.

-- thanks so much Ron., I would do almost anything to get down to Aussie and run a workshop, but I am sure it would be cost prohibitive, unfortunately.

I do travel to the Philippines to visit my wifes family., maybe next time I could take a detour south!

i think a little more contrast would help your shot., reminds me of this one I caught a couple of summers back..

Very nice shot, it's hard to get both prop blur and sharp shots (at least for me). Do you really think more contrast will look better? To my eye the photo would get too dark.

Most impressive, Raymond! Your work is really quite motivational.

Which a4 (Focus tracking with lock-on) setting do you use for this kind of work?

Thanks a lot for answering my question in this way.

Yesterday i was shooting a bird flight event. I was not very pleased with the results. That is the reason why i am interested in the hints from one who has more experience in this kind of photography than me. I used the 70~200Vr, but the light was bad: Iso 1600 and 1/800 s and rainy. AF setting was mostly like yours. Most shots are a little bit blurry (shorter exposure time needed) and more or less out of focus, especially when the bird flew directly to my position.

Greetings

Georg

-- thanks.. yes, your image is cool, but it just looks a little flat., if you do not mind, I will copy it, and do a small touch up., and post it here.

I won't touch it without permission.

take care.
