Never thought this would happen.....

Thanks for posting the Mayor's office and MTA links again Dez. It seems you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now I will have to carry a copy of that NYPD operations notice but I do wonder what the next set of questions would be if I presented it. Maybe saying that it was reported by the NY Post (June 21st 2009) might help and it is all over flickr and the web in general now.

In that notice I do worry about the last two sentences of the first paragraph regarding arrest and the ability of members to ask questions under the common law right of enquiry. You did a good job keeping calm and polite.

The Lumix does a good job. I might have to cave in and buy one. Your website is very good too.
Cheers

I love your pictures. I'm an American, born and raised in N.Y. but living in Amsterdam for 24 years.
Your unfortunate experience quite frankly make me SICK.

Although possibly over simplified you can thank the former administration among others for infringing on your freedom in the name of so called safety. Hopefully, things will get back to normal at some point in the near future!

Thanks.

I don't have a problem with the last paragraph. "Criminal activity or suspected terrorist activity" should get you butt hauled in jail. If you're innocent and doing nothing wrong, I suspect they will let you go as they did in my case.

Also, carrying proper ID at all times will help in any case.

Whatever happened to innocent till proven otherwise? Why should I have to carry ID in a free country?

He is NOT objecting to being stopped and asked, although that in itself is somewhat intrusive.

He is complaining that they told him that he was not permitted to take pictures of bridges in the interest of 'Homeland Security'. He has included in a subsequent post the NYPD directive that specifically states that the police are not permitted ot act as they did in his case.

What joy is there in liberty if it is to be abandoned so readily?

you should address your remarks to the 3000 dead in the World Trade
Center, no doubt they would be facinated, and think that everyone is
paranoid. and of course that they are not dead. amazing how fast
people forget 3000 dead, like it never happened.

as far as i am concerned it is going to happen again, at least as bad
probably worse. the real question is when.

for the cops, at least it shows that they are on patrol and looking
at the world about them.
What do you mean? Did you read my responses in this thread? I don't
have a problem with them checking me out. I had a problem with them
stating that you can't photograph bridges. That's not true.
then let them do their jobs. if they did not ask you what are the
taxpayers paying them for. as for arguing, that was your decision. if
it was me i would have said fine and moved on. there is no way in the
world that you win an argument with a couple of cops. they HAVE to
win. for you it was a nowin situation and you have known/realized
this. if you seriously object to the result of the encounter with
cops, then immediately at the first opportunity take the issue to the
correct place in the city goverment and try to change it, if you felt
that you were right. you did do that right?
Boy, you didn't get my post. I did let them do their jobs. They asked questions, I politely answered and they let me go. There were no arguments. I am "pro-Cop". As I mentioned, I have relatives in the NYPD.........but these guys misinterpreted the rules governing photographs in NYC. That's my point.

When I explained it to my Detective cousin, he stated that I handled it perfectly and that he wishes he would've been there.
As for the WTC, I was a first-responder at the World Trade Center's
Ground Zero. I was part of rescue & recovery and stayed there for 4
straight months after 9/11.
very good for you. but why did you forget why you were there in the
first place? it happened because of bunch of terrorists walked on
planes in boston, and noone was supicious enough to check. if we had
the security at the airports we have now , the WTC would still be
standing. and that is what we have forgotten.
the cops were doing what all cops should have done on 9/10.
Actually, no. Not very good for me. I didn't like working at Ground Zero but I felt like I had to do it. It's my city and I wanted to do my part to help make it great again.

Gary, you're way off base. Figured someone would make this political but didn't expect it from you. Neither Police officers nor photographers were at fault with what happened on 9/11. They were not the cause & effect. I want law enforcement to do their jobs, but interpret the laws correctly. That's their duty. My duty is to act like a civilian, which I did.

Hey Dez, seriouslly, I am thinking of taking the girls (and of course hubby) to NY in November. Could I tag along and go shooting with you? I would love it. I feel like I know you after all the years here seeing your great pix! And, after all, you are one of the main folks who helped when I was considering the 17-55. I want to go out and really use it!

As for PP, im sure its nothing for you, you can probably get the shot pretty close to great first time around...

What makes you choose Lumix over DSL? Just your mood?
Yes, that was the Lumix and thank you for the compliments. It's a
nice camera to carry around but you still have to PP :)

Hey Debra. Sounds good. How's that 17-55?

Sometimes I get the shot as intended but to get it really spot on, some PP is in order.

I carry the LX3 with me everywhere. The only time I take the SLR out is when I want to do some real sharp, low light or night photography. Or just when I don't mind going all out and bring the heavy stuff out.

The LX3 is a nice compliment to a SLR.

This bridge must have never been photographed before! You've just revealed that critical piece of information that will doom us all!

Note that trus the fact that you're not a terrorist. I mean, the cop asked you if you are one of them, and you said no. So we can eliminate suspicions of foul play thanks to this very fine investigation. Now you know why I feel safe in this country.

Something else that puts an end to all my suspicions:: the tripod! Terrorists are not too smart. They would not know about walking around and taking pictures as unconpiscuously as possible, so for sure they'd use a tripod.

Again, thank you NYPD or whoever for these fine investigation.

Nice pic / composition, though! Thank you for sharing (just make sure those terrorists that the NYPD is after don't use it for their dark purposes).

Hi Dez,

Sorry to heard that.. but, this is new for you?

I'm living in NYC for eight years and I had three bad experience with the NYPD, the last time they sent me court for taking "pictures in a highway" (totaly false).

I understand the responsibilities of this guy's to keep our streets free or drugs , terrorist, etc but my last experience was really bad because the way they treated me.

A simple camera is not going to hurt nobody... what is hurting this country is the high level corruption and the bad decisions of our leaders.

Regards.
