Greetings, y'all from the soggy midwest of the USA. Our last challenge was varied and full of creativity, thanks to Jill. I look forward to another Great Challenge.

Here are the details for our next Mini Challenge 157: “Still Life”

from Wikipedia: "A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting."

(As I've just spent 3 weeks of my summer vacation trapped inside by rain and thunderstorms, I thought I'd try for a theme that is not seasonal or weather-dependent!)

As always, themes are open to your interpretation of it!

The Mini Challenges are meant to be very informal & encourage participation by having few rules.

In keeping with that spirit, here are the guidelines for MC 157.

1. You may enter up to 3 photos.

2. Photos may be shot with any camera and may be taken at any time.

3. The winner of a mini challenge chooses the next challenge and selects the winner, who takes the baton and carries on with it.

4. Please post your entries by replying to this original post – rather than under someone else’s post - and change the subject line to “My entry” or “Entry #1 or something like that to separate your picture posts from comments that someone may make about your post.

5. In the spirit of the previous challenge, I too, would like to nominate the previous host, to take over my role in the event of something happening to me, and that would be Jill.

6. The challenge will end on Thursday, June 25th at 23:00 hours GMT giving all some time over the week end to do some shooting, should they need to :-) The results should be up in an hour or two afterward.

7. As usual exhibition entries will be allowed.

8. As encouragement to all, everyone who enters or exhibits, please try to comment on at least one other photo. I know how much every comment means to me & I'm sure others feel the same way.

Here are a few of my interpretations of 'still life':

I like how the light seems focused right on the cat, with just a few streaks on the chest of drawers. Thanks for getting us started!

A minimalist photo, that is very striking. Is the yellow stripe the center lane on a road? Now, I'm worried for both the leaf getting squished and you, too, John! This picture fits the still life theme, and although unknown to you, it also fit into my other idea for a theme: using only one color!

This was my first serious attempt at still life and my first with a homemade softbox and my off-camera flash as the primary light source. My daughter was moving to a new apartment and wanted a primariily red still life for her kitchen wall. This one is now framed and hanging on her wall at 20X28 inches.

The quintessential still life and lighting exercise - eggs in a white bowl on a white background. Again, using my homemade softbox and off-camera wireless flash from the upper right as the only light source.

No softbox this time... just window light and a little fill from the left with my off-camera wireless flash again. The background is my navy chef's apron:

I like this shot a lot. The lighting is perfect, no glare on the vegetables and no harsh shadows. The reflection adds to the shot and the crop again is perfect, just enough borders and not too much of the reflection. Well done!

I never realized how many shades of white (technically I guess it's shades of gray) there are. The white balance is right on, and as in the previous shot, the flash lights the picture without harsh glare or shadows. The shadows that are present enhance the picture. You've created another masterpiece, worthy of hanging on the wall in a large size!

A nice sharp image. Even at our reduced sizes, the print is crisp. Again, a great idea for a still life. There is more glare in this shot than the other two, but that maybe due to the reflective nature of glass.

Interesting shot, Bill. What is that? Definitely looks like a cave mouse. Nice angle on the shot and I like the selective focus, where mainly the head and body are sharp and outside of that, the focus blurs attractively. Good choice on cropping too, as the bright areas at the top would tend to draw your eye away from the subject, but you minimized that with the tight crop. Well done!
