E-P1: Why not an add-on electronic viewfinder!!

Why did Olympus not think about giving us an optional ELECTRONIC ADD-ON VIEWFINDER for the hot-shoe?

Owning and loving a Pana G1, I find it great to have the option to switch between the LCD and the EVF. Especially in bright light or difficult manual focus situations e.g. when using my Leica lenses for low-light shots, the EVF is a necessity. And the super-high-resolution of the G1 EVF with the focus-loupe feature greatly compensates any problems a lower-pixel LCD might cause.

The E-P1 add-on OPTICAL viewfinder is for a fix lens only and is useless when using a zoom-lens. An ELECTRONIC add-on VF would be the solution.

Come on, Olympus, start developing an electronic viewfinder for the E-P2!

If you read the review you will see that both a external flash and an external add-on viewfinder are available as extra options.

Actually, hes aware that there is an OVF extra but what he wants is an EVF addon. I agree it'll be much more useful than the OVF.

Sealed m4/3 with 12-60 please :-) !!

While they could use a wireless connection, I doubt it. I'd settle for an optical finder with zooming or "bright lines" driven by the focal length data provided for zoom flashes. Maybe they could add an AF illuminator at the same time.

Hi Baoling,
But that EVF under development is not for EP-1. On the hotshoe of
EP-1, there is no extra contact pin for data tranfer.
don't the existing Oly DSLRs communicate with the intelligent flash units already? would it need extra contacts? also, I know it sounds kludgy, but couldnt a usb / hdmi cable be linked to a removeable evf?

Surely there are possibilities for a future E-P1 EVF option? how about using an Eye-Fi link to a removeable EVF/trigger... the iphone/ipod touch would be perfect for this imho.

Kind Regards

You can buy a E-P1 now, invest in lenses and support Olympus's bold move, then upgrade when the next model comes out in 2 years.

In the meantime, you'll still have alot of fun!

Daniel.

Hi, Brian,

I don't think the current hot shoe owns the ability for fast data transfer, you know, communication with flash is much simpler. Richo GX100&GX200, for example, have extra contacts for this fast data transfer. Wireless connection? I doubt it, at least for EP-1. No evidence shows that EP-1 has wireless connection; otherwise, it may be very possible to upload images directly to computers or get remote monitoring and it will be a hot sell point.

Potential for this came the moment Oly ditched xD in favour of SDHC - the incredible Eye-Fi interface could be supported properly, to allow an improved form of EVF/remote control interface now available for Canon DSLRs.

As for communication speed through a single direct contact - I guess that depends on what electronics are inside the E-P1.

Kind Regards

If it had been planned there would be some extra contacts, not a cord
running into an open accessory door.

He does mention a future model with EVF. "Electronic viewfinders and
more lenses will be developed" refers to new system cameras, I think.

Jan, I agree with you... I'm just not ruling anything out at this stage.

It seems to me, that where there's a strong need - a solution will arrive.

Here's an example of a 3rd party product :

I'd prefer something more streamlined / integrated by Oly, similar to the Ricoh evf.

Curious if the resolution is decent.

I think Thom's idea of using the hoodman loupe may be the best I've
heard yet.
