Birds in flight what shutter speed.

How did they focus on BIF in the days before auto focus? Was it just
set to infinity and hope for the best? or did they actually try to
manipulate the lens to focus on the critter?
I think that the kinds of BIF photos that even advanced amateurs can get today were very rare back in the days of film and manual focus.

Not only did they have to manually focus, but they also had a limited number of shots on film and it wasn't as easy to generate the right shutter speed because they didn't have the same quality we do with raised ISO.

My hat's off to the ones who did produce good photos back then. It is certainly a lot easier now (though still requires some technique).
