I will be vactioning in London and other locations in England for two weeks in July. I plan to shoot with a 990 and 2 128mb CF. Any tips on shooting in this place I'm not really familar with? What should I do about charging batteries--buy an adapter?
Thanks,
Michael

By all means buy an adaptor! Stay away from tourist traps and long lines like the Tower etc

Take the train to Cambridge and the short train to Windsor and then walk over the bridge to Eaton,Skip Oxford and Avon,

Train or drive through the Cotswalds to Bath. Go to Cornwall. Never head out of London towards the beachs;
worse traffic than LA. Enjoy

I too will be vacationing in the UK this July (along with half the world I bet) and will

be bringing my Nikon 990 with me as well. I ordered the giant 192 meg sandisk to

hopefully fit my trip on and I use the Maha C204F charger. I saw that Maha sold a
special European adapter for the charger, but it cost almost as much as the
charger itself.

Is there any reason why I can't just buy a cheap little plug to go on the end of the
standard AC Adapter that came with the charger?

What about the Nikon Camera's AC adapter? Do I need a whole new adapter again
for that or just a plug?

And on a side note, how reliable are these compact flash cards? I hear that most of

you tend to buy several smaller cards to spread the wealth around. I don't want to

have to worry about the possibility of my card dying on the last day and taking my
300 pictures with it...

Also, do I have to worry about airport metal detectors with these CF cards as I did
with normal film? I am guessing not but better safe then sorry.

Thanks.

While you're driving through the Cotswalds, be sure to visit Tetbury (quaint little place) off A433. If you pass a driveway on the west side with orange cones, be sure not to stop and turn in or you may be very politely, but very firmly detained and questioned in a quite civil manner about your intentions (Prince' s Digs). :-))

Michael,

It would take a long time to advise where to go and how to shoot. I have been there about 12 times. Be prepared to do your best in overcast conditions. You won't see the

sun every day. The country side is the nicest part. Farms, thatched roofs old castles

etc. What I can tell you for sure is that the little plug adapters cost very little.

I keep about three of them. They are two cylindrical pins. The charger I use for that

voltage is from Greenbatteries.com. It is dual voltage, very compact and the plug folds

into the body. Also not expensive. If you use a 110 charger, the transformers are only

about $10.00, but something else to carry. On the AC adapter, read the fine print.
Mine is dual voltage. Have a dark ale in my name.
Cheers, Paul Linder

This is going to sound like a broken record, but I'm also going to be in the UK the last week of July/first week of August. This is my 3rd consecutive year of going, but my first 'digital' trip. My plan for handling my D1 on the trip is as follows:

I have enough CF storage for 20+ rolls of film (on previous trips I have never taken more than 12 rolls).
I have an extra battery for the D1 so I can get through the day.

If 2 batteries don't do it, I bought a DC to AC power converter that can plug into the car lighter/accessory plug.
I have the adapter plug so I can charge my batteries each night at the B&B.

If at all possible I plan to stop at internet cafes and send images already taken to free up the CF cards in case I find myself taking more pictures than expected. I am trying not to carry the added weight of my laptop.

As for actual shooting, be prepared for overcast days. By all means get out into the countryside and away from the city. Rent a car and do some day tripping. The first time I went I did the whole trip via train. You miss ALOT that way. And driving there has proven to be quite easy if you rent an automatic transmission car.
