I have gotten to know many of you over the last month -- so many unique styles and creative images. Who has influenced your creativity?

It would be great if you could describe why you chose who you chose and even better if you could provide links to sites or works so we could all discover new influences. -- LC

I'll start with Adams, but only because the rest will follow in alphabetical order: Evans, Frank, Hine, Salgado, Smith, Steichen, Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, White.

As you say, there are so many, but these, I think, are well worth seeking out as many examples as possible in books. A small sample of each one's work is at http://www.masters-of-photography.com/index.html , except for the work of Robert Frank. Don't know why he's not there. Definitely a master too.

Good thread. Can't wait to follow up on all those I don't know.

What a terrific topic...don't think it's "off" at all!..just don't know where to start. hmm-m-m-m,

I think I've been mostly influenced by visual artists such as, Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe.

Realism, light & shadows, faces, abstracting the ordinary, mood,lighting...all of these qualitied attract me to these artists. When I was in college (back when Christ was a teenager), I did a photographic essay on women. This was a compelling project for me.

Simultaniously, I wished that I would wake up one day & find myelf transformed into a National Geographic photographer.

Ansel Adams...teaches me humility.

All of the people who go to a war to document reality...God bless them.

My mother took so many pictures of me growing up...great example, huh?

Well, untill i think of others,

Ian, thanks for your post. This is what I had hoped this thread would do -- bring to our attention a variety of different artist. I was not familiar with Aidan O'Rourke, a freelance photographer-journalist-web publisher. He is one of the few photographers with an extensive web site of his work -- fun exploring all the nooks and cranies of his site. http://www.aidan.co.uk/main/index.html

I know you are living California, but I wondered if you were once from the UK, particularly with your very creative shot of Warwick Castle on Photosig: http://www.photosig.com/viewphoto.php?id=171191

and since this photographer, Aridan O'Rourke, has done a wonderful job bringing to life the Manchester region. Thanks for bringing this artist to my attention. -- LC

From the time I received my first National Geographic when I was a kid, the photos presented there of nature had a great impact on me.

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/photography/

The one photographer that I believe had the greatest impact on me was Ansel Adams. This was mainly during my B&W days when I was shooting with my Canon F1.

During my recent digital days, the photographers here who have shamelessly called themselfs - The DORKS (Dpreview Olympus Really Krazy Society) have had a great impact on me.

'Life is a dance, Love is the music.'

Robert Adams, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbot, George Tice, Ray Mortenson.

Probably my all time favourites would be George Tice's Paterson book, and Ray Mortenson's photographs of the New Jersey Meadowlands.

Also, as trite as it may sound, my earliest influences were Gary Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank.

Totally agree with you OMSteve

Forrest and Daniella,

Not surprised that Art Wolfe would have an influence on both of your work. It is interesting to visit Art Wolfe's site and see his tribune to Rowell's after their tragic plane crash of a week ago. http://www.artwolfe.com/

If you are not familiar with Art Wolfe you must see the slide shows of his work. http://www.artwolfe.com/multimedia.html Too bad they can't be larger, but most are breathtaking even reduced in size.

Forrest I hadn't taken the opportunity and visited your gallery until this morning -- http://home.att.net/~f.croce/ Outstanding!

Interesting name for your gallery 'Valhalla Photos'. Valhalla was the mythical hall where Odin received the souls of slain heros, no?. What is the significance?

Forrest thanks so much for your post. -- LC

Thanks, El See! That's nice to hear.

Exactly ... the halls of the dead, where the brave live forever. The Nordic form of heaven. My favorite places on Earth are the tops of mountains, or in high conifer forests; it seemed pretty appropriate. ( Besides, I'm mostly Scandanavian, and I wanted the name of my business to reflect that. )
