I have just started using my F707 and want to buy the basic accessories I need to get by. I also want to use my $20 rebate from Sony before it expires. Could anyone tell me what are the top two or three basic accessories I should get with this camera. I am certainly going to buy a 128MB Memory Stick. Next maybe the Polarizing Filter for $100 from Sony? I don't really think I need anything else right now. Maybe a tripod in the near future. I want to learn more about the camera first. Btw, I will be taking mostly outdoor pictures of my kids playing sports. Should I use my $20 E-Coupon on the Filter and get the 128 MB Stick on pagecomputers.com for $66.97 or do I not even need the filter right now? Help please!

ginny... I've only had my F707 for a little over a week but the best investment i made for my cam was a 128mb memory stick. It's pretty much a must for this cam. This is definately the first upgrade I would do if I were you.

Well 1st off welcome to the 707 clan.

2nd save your self $80 and buy your self a hoya Pol Filter. Will do the exact same thing as the 100 Sony one.

Getting the 128 is a good idea infact if you plan to shoot at the highest res and in fine get several sticks. Once again if you shop around you can find them cheaper then from sony or by going with a diferent brand.
Protect your lens get a UV filter for your 707
get yourself a tripod too.

I have a photographic memory, but I always seem to have the lens cap on.

--Hey there.. I'm pretty new to the digital world as well, but I can tell you this from lots of research..... DO NOT waist your money on the filters from Sony.. Way over priced!!!! The flash for the sony 707 is a good investment, and maybe even the .7 wide angle telephoto lens from Sony.
But there are loads of after market out there...

Check out http://www.camerafilters.com or http://www.2filter.com or http://www.photofilter.com for your filter needs.... I like Camerfilter.com for their service.

For extra lenses = check out http://www.raynox.com for a multitude of lenses.

They come with a 52mm thread, so you will need a 52mm to 58mm adapter... Do lots of reaearch and ask pleanty of questions on the topic you are researching... They guys here are great.. Everything I mentioned was given to me at this forum.... Happy hunting......

ginny: I bought my Sony 707 camera about two weeks ago and love it. I just received two 128MB Lexar memory sticks and a Sony HVL-F1000 flash from Buy.com. I paid $80.45 for the HVL-F100 flash, as compared to Sony.com $119.95, and I paid $58.63 for each memory stick plus a $10 mail-in rebate on each. Also the shipping on the memory sticks was free. All in all, I thought all three were a good price. Hope you enjoy your 707 and hope to see you on here often.

I wanted to use the $20 coupon from Sony ... and looked for the cheapest item they offered. I ended up buying the lens hood. But keep in mind, you might find other flexible hoods more useful. Sony's looks high tech and all, but the others might be more practical. Bottom line: you might save money and get better stuff by not using the coupon.

The best to you!

Peter, Thanks for the feedback. couple of questions though, i've heard (only once that is) that someone had a problem with one of the memory sticks you mentioned. Is there any reason for me to believe the sony memory sticks are better? Also, why did you buy the flash as one of your first accessories as opposed to something else like a filter or something?

lexar sticks are totally fine - dunno about sandisk. trust me, just go with the lexar - no difference at all.

flash - i use primarily for indoor shots of people. you may not need this. i got a hoya uv filter super-hmc for around $23 - good for lens protection.

polarizer - please don't spend $100 on a polarizer. i spent only $40 or so on one from http://www.2filter.com - a hoya HMC cir-polarizer. it works fine. its coated too.

Buy the flash first. That's just my opinion.

i wanted to use the $20 e-coupon too so i ordered the remote RM-DR1 seemed the most difficult to find that i maight want and also with the $20 coupon seemed reasonablely priced. it will come in handy when using the tripod in macro and for portraits.

Peace
Dave

Since nobody mentioned this, you do not need a circular polarizer, a linear will do just fine and costs less.

Ginny, Don't forget to get a nice bag for your 707 and its accessories. I have a Lowepro Nova 4 and a Lowepro Omni Mini. The Nova 4 will easily hold the 707 and lots of accessories. The Omni Mini is a great bag to use for hiking or biking. It will hold the camera and a few accessories. The wide angle lens even fits into it. Check them out at http://www.lowepro.com

Enjoy your new camera, AJ

Get an extra battery and an external battery charger, cuz when your battery runs down, the only way to charge it is in the camera.

Your camera will be out of action while the battery is charging.

With the extra battery, you slap it in and go take pictures while the 1st one is charging in the external charger.

thanks everyone so much for your suggestions on buying F707 accessories. I'm wondering now do most of you order your accessories direct from Sony or do you try to avoid them at all costs. Is any of Sony's accessories designed specifically for the F707 better to use for this camera than buying off brands. For example, can you use other tripods, external battery chargers etc, instead of the ones they sell? And are they as good?
Enjoy your new camera, AJ
