Just got my s602z yesterday, been playing with it a little (wow! I can't believe how speedy it is compared to my old Kodak 3400), and tried taking a movie of my son. I can view it in the VideoImpression app (which I installed directly from it's subfolder on the cdrom -- I've had too many bad experiences with USB drivers of all sorts screwing my win2k box up to risk the "full" install).

Anyways, I can't view the movie on any other pc in my house (a collection of win98 and win2k boxes). How does one go about converting these .avi's to something a little more standard (say, mpg, and with a whole lot more compression)?

I have no problem viewing the .avi's on media player 6 (packaged with the free IE 6 update) and finepix viewer in windows 98se. Media player 6 looks better with less blocky pixels showing during playback.

Hmmm, I've got media player 7.01 on my win2k box, and I cannot play these .avi's on it. (I can play them with the QuickTime 5.0.2 player).

To be honest, I don't really remember the number of the media player....but it is the "new" one packaged with the newest version of IE6.

I would also like to learn how to convert these to .mpg's. I tried once in finepix viewer and I got an error message I haven't tried to figure out yet.

First of all..
Download the latest DirectX drivers from microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/directx

This will solve your program.

Secondly, once this is installed, use any video file converter (do a search)

and you should be able to convert to any format. (FlashMPG, Can't remember other file converter software)

I've been using VirtualDub to convert unpacked avi to DivX avi. Size is about 12-14% of normal avi and quality is same. Of course you need divx codecs (download from http://www.divx.com ). VirtualDub homepage can be found with google.

Another decent encoder is TMPGenc. The latest Windows Media Player is actually version 8.

The one I use with my firewire minidv cam is the above and also the one from http://www.puremotion,com 'mpegXS' the quality is very good indeed.
