yes, ignoring is an option, and it's something I have started to do
and it's working. I just think kill files would make it all easier,
because now the quality of the material in the forum for you and the
posts with zero calorie content dissappear.

Anyway, it's just an idea given several things were discussed recently.
I think tag lines should be limited to 12 words. It takes too much time to read the one below every time this guy posts. \;-)

People who claim to be open minded never see it my way.

ignore as a global function
right click nick, select ignore
discussion is hidden both ways

that prevents you seeing comments from those you ignore
and prevents those same people seeing your posts

this satisfies the problems some people have that feel pursued

and prevents the ignored from escalating a problem behind a persons back, and dismisses subsequent paranoias.

Hi, I use pbase but haven't noticed the Friend/Foe system? is that
used in the forums? I can't even find it there...
Yes, it's used in the PBase forums, but it isn't immediately obvious.

When you go to the forums' index page in PBase, head up to the top of the page for a tab marked "Settings" On the Settings page, see the blue tab at the top, last in a series of five, beginning "Overview," "Profile," etc., that says "Friends & Foes."

Under the F&F tab, you find two choices on the left. One is for setting friends' posts, which become highlighted in green whenever they appear on the forums (or when anyone posts to one of their threads). The other is for setting foes, which is actually a bit strong to call what actually happens. You enter the user name of the person whose posts you no longer wish to see into the box in the center. What actually happens is that you see that the person has posted, but the subject line and other information is not shown. You have the option to click anywhere on that post if you change your mind and want to see it after all. However, the person stays on your Foes list until you go back to the Settings page to remove it.

I find it to be marvelously effective, myself.

Good suggestion - if a filter method was chosen this makes good sense.

Cheers

But if you say it works... maybe worth serious consideration. I'd
just say make friend/foe a pushbutton against the poster name
somewhere.

But ultimately, I think I'd prefer to sort issues out by talking and
reaching some common ground.
Yes, I agree that talking something out is better. The foe button is a last resort when attempts to do that have failed.

It needn't be inconvenient. You just cut and paste the name into the box that is three or four clicks away. Maybe it's good to have those three or four clicks worth of time to think it over anyway.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Me.... I think I'll "killfile" only the people that agree with me, so I can learn faster. :-)

Plus it'll be a shorter list, easier to generate.

Pretty much a kill file with a few variants. So you are saying that works pretty good? I am for it, if it works there. I know since time immemorial killfiles seem to work on usenet but maybe there were some issues or some issues from dpreview's staff point of view, since I am not in their office managing this website, I wouldn't know.

thanks Brian
i think it would slow down the bulk of the shenanigans here
and offer users some control over their situation

another aspect of control is the punishment rapped out to offenders
i can think of other ways to limit a persons mobility

1/ Perhaps the more transient offenders that hit and run fora, then split to do the same thing somewhere else,
......just ban them from particular forums and limit their mobility

Part of their creed is attention, take attention out of the equation, and there isnt any incentive for them to be here.

2/ People who are most affected by bans are more usually sane posters who are regular contributors. Trolls dont care, trolls get back in the next nick and the next, in the present system, there just isnt any way to prevent that

what i am describing, in a hard rule context, sees regular contributors more affected than trolls who just suffer a slight inconvenience

Who would decide on who is allowed to discuss in the Oly DSLR forum?

Would I be allowed there?

I'm very interested in the uFT format cameras and lenses but I end up in the same discussions once some user claim that their 300 F2.8 on FT behaves like a 600 F2.8 on 35mmFF ... That it would be as fast in low light for instance.

i dont see why not,

there are a lot of new faces there looking for info that we mostly dont have at this point. 5 days to go....

bit OT but ok..
its F5.6 DoF wise
but F2.8 exposure wise

i dont think its as simple as saying its 300/2.8 is therefore 600/2.8 or 600/5.6

There are a lot of friendly and passionate Oly users there who will be glad to discuss m4/3rds and help where they can... and with so much traffic, you're likely to come across some odd characters too - you get what you give mostly so I find it a very respectful and friendly place.

Kind Regards

Don't read what you don't want to, and more importantly, you don't
have to reply to every post.
Honestly, after reading so of the posts in this, I wonder how some of
you deal with real problems.
Meh, it's just a suggestion. Many internet places have similar or identical. It also cuts down on text and information is easier to find by each individual.

It was a subtle demonstrative point without a blatant explanation, which is why it was missed. People were complaining about HAVING to read every post and wanting an "ignore" button instead of exercising self-control. Here is the blatant explanation of my point: I don't HAVE to read your tag line every time - I can ignore it. :-)

Your new "signature" line is much improved, however - if I may be so bold, a "signature" line should have a single thought or message. What you have here is a bio-resume / signature line. My 2¢ worth of food for thought.
