What would you like to see in the next Fuji S3Pro?

I would like to see:

Priority 1:
  • full size 24x36mm sensor with true 12mp
  • based on Nikon F100 body (1/500 sync speed, low shutter release lag)
  • Only use AA batteries, with no need for CR123
  • TTL capabilities with all flash from 100 all the way to max ISO
  • Eliminate moire problem
Priority 2:
  • Flashing blown out highlights
  • High resolution and accurate LCD screen
  • Bright and large viewfinder (kinda small now)
  • Better RAW file software
Priority 3:
  • Dust protection for sensor
  • Wireless LAN or bluetooth for direct download to remote laptop.
  • ISO 3200 and 6400 modes that are as clean as S2Pro @ISO 1600

Robin,

I agree . . . although I wonder is it possible?

Come on! I haven't even busted open my box yet and you're talking about the next one! :-)....I know...It's all a function of technology, but geeze. :-)

Dreaming is fine, but don't forget to enjoy your S2Pro NOW. Comparing to older/previous models always makes a product look good, thinking about missing/wanted features always makes a product look bad. The S2Pro is not bad. In fact, it's quit good.

Let me rephrase that: the S2pro is one hell of a camera!

Cheers!

Priority 1:

Interchangable focusing screens. I really would like to be able to use manual focusing screens.
Faster sync speed would be nice too.
Even lower noise and higher iso.

That's it..

I agree with Robin's assessment. I was seriously considering the S2, but I figure I will be able to afford only 1 dslr in my lifetime, so I want it to be good. I am concerned about the following points on the S2:
  • Plastic body (I'm used to the build of my F4s, which it took me 10 years to make/save enough money to buy the pair. Now I'm looking at buying a plastic camera that costs more than the pair of the F4s. I don't think so.
  • Ability to use older AI and AIS lenses with metering. This is a huge drawback for me buying a S2. I would have to buy many new lenses and take a beating on selling my MF Nikkors. It is a mystery to me why Fuji, if they wanted to stick "Pro" onto the camera name, chose to build the camera on a consumer body that costs a few hundred dollars. Why not make a truly pro camera and build on the F100. I'd probably buy it if that were the case.
  • On the plus side, I like Fuji's ability to use the 4 AA batteries. I use a Nikon D1H at work and hate it. The camera eats batteries. I get only 40 to 50 shots per fully charged battery. I can't imagine trying to do a wedding with one of these beasts. You'd need 10 batteries, = $1,000. Hey, that's another F4s!

What would you like to see in the next Fuji S3Pro?
I'd like:
1. The histogram to pop up on the postview along with the image.

2. The body redesigned so I won't be constantly wiping nose prints off the LCD screen.

3. A "RAW-COMPRESSED" mode, so I can get more than 9 images out of a 128MB card.

4. The AA battery tray eliminated, and the old S1 drop-down door for AA access brought back.

Lou

It may be plastic on the outside, but there's a strong frame underneath. And if you've seen modern plastics, they are far stronger than many metal bodied cameras. My S1pro for example has taken hits that would easily have scratched or dented a metal clad body.

As to the lens issue, the reality is that the lenses you cite, while good lenses are just not modern enough for today's cameras. Making a camera fully backwards compatible would be hugely expensive, which is why Canon decided to completely revamp their lens system when they went AF. By way of comparison, I doubt that you still use a tube based radio or TV, even though they work. Technology improves; things change.

And Fuji didn't choose the body; that's what Nikon would sell to them (although Nikon might be having second thoughts about that now). There were even rumors that Nikon wouldn't give them any body at all. Thankfully, Nikon and Fuji agreed on the N80 and not the N55 or N65.

Finally, you need to properly condition your D1x batteries to get more shots out of them, otherwise you will only get 50 shots. Check out the Nikon SLR forum and do a search on battery conditioning; you'll be a lot less irritated if you can get more shots out of your D1x.

Having just ordered an S2 but not received it yet, I hope the next one won't even be announced for at least 24 months. We can't have the S2 depreciate that quickly now can we.

There are speculators and there are hecklers.

I'm gonna be the heckler because I think speculating a S3 is stupid right now.

Maybe write to fujifilm about your wish list. Dont be surprised to find out that they may post it on the cork board for laughs.

I'd like following features:

Priority 2:
  • one button (or part of programmable/customizable functions) - for zooming in to the 100% magnification (to the center of the image - or better the focusing spot) to quickly assess sharpness without having to wait for it to zoom in from "fit to window" zoom in to the 100% zoom.
Priority 3:
  • feature of postview/preview type to postview on the LCD the last shot for indefinitely (or say for 30 seconds - if not touched controls, otherwise keep showing) with ability to zoom-in (with above feature or else), and bring up histogram, delete images, etc. This is preferred vs. preview with histogram, because it's common to get carried away (with preview mode) and forget to "save" pictures in preview, so instead shots get saved right away, but shown for longer period of time on LCD for user to assess and delete if not needed.

i would like t see none of these new fangled techno gobblydook

i want the next fuji not to have instant return mirror and not to have autofocus , and what this model doesnt even use film?

what kind of blasphemy is that , thats it i want the next model to use film and not have any autoexposure and to forget a lcd monitor. and of course it shouldnt use batteries , i mean come on , what is this the 21st century already?

the above is only satire not to be taken seriously

What I would like, and I am sure others would think it is a nusense, is how about putting that toggle button (the circle button with the arrows) where the thumb rest is. Nothing is more frustrating to me than to have to move the camera away from my eye to adjust the focus area.

Also, I can't wait until Bibble comes out with S2 support. The Fuji Software really really sucks!

I will be playing around with Qimage but to me it just APPEARS cumbersome. I could be wrong!

How about this... S4!

No wait, I cant wait for the S4 because I want the S5. I want the S5 to be able to shoot underwater 165m without needing a housing.

I want the S5 to shoot at 100 frames per second.

I want the S5 to greet me by my first name when I turn it on, "Good morning Eric" for morning time and the S5 will greet me like this during the evening as, "Good evening Eric, how are you tonight?"

Oh, so much more I want from the S5

Your point is good and all, but if it had all those things it would not be state of the art and if it were on a F100 body it would also cost far more and your already complaining about the cost as it is.

What I would like, and I am sure others would
I would like for it to be able to read my mind and to transmit what it sees directly into my optic nerves.

I would like that it was 1 cubic centimeter large and yet able of ISO 1 000 000 without any perceptible noise at all.
I would like that it had a dynamic range at least 48 stops.

I would like that it had anti-gravity and that it could hover into any position that I would telepathically command it to reach.

I would like for it to have a gravitationnal lens able to zoom from 1mm to 1 000 000 meters and focus in 1/1 000 000th of a second.

I would like to have a maximum speed of 1 nanosecond and a light gathering system equivalent to f0.000 000 1, yet always on the sweetest spot for clarity.

I would like for it to remain unshaken (or at least within 1/1 000 000th of a micron) in a force 10 gusting wind.

I would like that it could take IMAX size movies at 2000 frames/sec (for slow motion) and at a resolution that you could put your nose on and still discover detail.

I would like for it to have an integrated printer for those resolutions and a laser projector too. (And a paper mill too... well if possible ?)

I think that I'll stop there. This may seem demanding but, honestly, I COULD have asked for more.
