Canon G1, the perfect camera?

I bought a G1 recently as a gift. It had all the features I was looking for and at a good price. Since I bought it, I've been looking for another one or one with the same features but I'm starting to see that there are almost no other cameras that can compete with it for a total package camera.

It just seems that so many are "almost there" but lack two or just one feature that the G1 has. If anyone has suggestions for a camera that could compete with the G1 I'd appreciate it. I'm looking for the following features:

CF 2 (I'd settle for CF1 I guess)

3MP

movie mode w/audio: at least 30 sec 320x240

min 3x optical zoom

remote! -must have

in camera charging (I'd settle for a charger one)

video out!- must have

USB

quality at least as good as the G1- must have!

I know you are probably saying, 'why not just buy another G1?' I'd like to but ebay is pretty much the main place to find them and people have been bidding them up to the rediculous $500 range for used.

I think there are plenty of worthy contenders - how about a Fuji S602Z? Similar image quality, much better video mode (unlimited except by capacity in length with 1 gigabyte microdrive at 640x480), faster burst, post capture mode, uses Type I or micro-drive and SmartMedia, has 6x optical zoom, does better macros, etc.

Then there is the Nikon CP4500. More resolution, uses Type I or Type II including micro-drive, about the same movie mode, corrects perspective in camera, has many more dedicated modes, has 4 megapixels, has the "best" macro performance of any consumer digicam, takes many more peripherals, has 4x optical zoom to 155mm, takes a vast multitude of tele adapters and can digiscope at 6000mm with spotting scope. Has swivel lens rather than swivel LCD, etc.

And yes, I have all three of the above....

There is always the G2.

the G2. The G1 is seriously flawed. It will take a picture, even though it could not get focus lock. The C-M-Y-G filter produces color that is 'off', and hard to correct.

I bought one and the G2 came out 2 months later. I couldn't wait to sell the G1 to get the G2. Same great features with the killer flaws fixed.

Thanks I will take a closer look at the cp4500. I guess I just never liked the body style so I generally stayed away from it. Not logical I know.

I would be happy with a G2 very happy, and probably the Nikon and S602z too; but -- none of those (used) can compete with the price of a used G1, assuming you catch one on ebay at the right time. I got mine for $355, all original box and accesories. I guess I was getting frustrated with people paying G2 prices for G1's on ebay, driving up the bids for the rest of us. So I wanted to broaden my horizons.

Thanks for the replies.

You can ge tthe 602 for around 550 new. The cp4500 will cost something around $600. I would get the 602, good camera and a good value.

the g2 is newer and used ones are as low as $400 US because of all the problems with the camera. Since the G1 is older, someone would be nuts to pay $500

Real,

I'd be happy if you were right on those prices and I was wrong. But I was gauging the going rate of each camera by ebay. That's the biggest marketplace for used camera's I know of. Is there a better site/location to buy used digicams?

You can check what each one went for at recent auctions by searching for "Canon G1 Camera" then cilcking on 'completed items' on the left.

be aware of shady stores (east coast stores) (stores with crazy low prices)

Well I tried to find completed G1 auctions but found no recent, just some accessories. Perhapos you could give us a link. New g2 w/warranty auctions for $600 usually bundled with accessories. There are so many G2 for sale ( problem camera??? ) that e-bay has a specific search link for it. Why everyone bailing out of this camera ???

As I said in my previous post:

---------------------------------------------

There are 4 or 5 G1's with current auctions, plus many more recently completed auctions. Same for G2.

Now, perhaps you'd provide a link to the $400 used G2 you mentioned earlier.

Can any of you shed some lights between the Canon G2 and Fuji s602 zoom please?

i have almost set my mind in ordering the G2 until i saw Lin Evin's posting....602 does look like a good deal (6x optical zoom and 30fps video capability)

But (based on the reviews here) i like the image quality of G2 better. espcially this comparison: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujis602z/page13.asp

anyone who know more about cameras, please give some insight. Thanks
